Video Card Upgrade

Featured Replies

Now that I've got FSX running without lock-ups or CTD's, I'm thinking of upgrading from my EVGA 7600 GT w/256 mb to either a GeForce 9600 GT or a Radeon HD 3870 with 512 mb. My monitor resolution is 1400 x 1050 and flight sim is the only "game" I play. I realize I probably won't see any significant improvement in fps, but will I see an improvement in video quality, texture loading, or other?Any advice would be appreciated,Dale

>>will I see an improvement in video quality, texture loading, or other? You sure will. The extra memory of one of the listed cards will speed texture loading and the newer GPU will allow you to increase visual quality without degrading performance.

Both cards are good choices for under $200 USD. I went with the EVGA 9600GT SSC 512MB for my e6750 and I'm more than pleased with its performance. My monitor resolution is 1680x1050 and I get 15-17 fps when flying over NYC using the vanilla Ultra High settings with DX 10 Preview turned on.

Thanks for the input. I was leaning toward the Radeon 3870, based on what I have read on another topic in this forum. With XP and DX9, I'm averaging 24 fps with most of the settings right of center except AI and ground traffic (although I haven't tried it over NYC). I don't plan on converting to VISTA, so DX10 isn't a consideration at this point. If I could get the textures to load a bit faster and reduce some "shimmer" I'd be happy.Dale

Hi Dale,I'm upgrading my vid card as well, coming from a 7900GS, 256mb(E6600m 2mb ram). I used to get constant CTDs and though I fixed most of it, I do get an occaisional CTD. With all the problems with nvidia (7xxx cards, drivers, etc) and with my friend with an 8800 gts 640 also getting a CTD once in a while, I'm going with the 3870. I hear virtually zero problems with that card and I'm looking for stability first and foremost. Also, it seems everyone with the 3870 is very heppy with it. Just my $.02. Good luck with the upgrade.Todd

yeah with a newer card you'll be able to crank up the AA and AF, but don't count on a FPS increase...

Yeah, I'm not thinking of picking up many frames, the GS does very well actually, just that 256 mb on board is not enough and I think the texture loading with that little memory causes my problems. I'm pretty sure going to 512 mb will help me out quite a bit. I heard another price decrease was coming on the 3870's and am just waiting for it. Still, the two cards I'm considering are quite affordable now. I'm getting antzy...
