Search link (present in the right-hand side of the Start menu) is removedwhen you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. Also, the Search context menuitem is removed. There are other ways to launch search. Hi, Dougal.Well come to Vista 64, the Perrrrrrfect OS. They managed to mess up one of the best and the most useful features in their previous OSs.If you did not manage to fix your problem yet, generate a Restore point first, and back up All your data, then Boot with your original Vista CD in drive, press F8 on Boot up, go to Repair and see if you get lucky. Good luck. TV

Just be aware that if you are attempting a repair install of Vista, and your original disks are original Vista (pre SP1) and you have installed SP1 you CANNOT use your original disks to do a repair. The only thing you can do in this case is a clean install. You must have a Vista install disk with SP1 integrated to attempt a repair install if you have installed SP1.

Reverting to pre-SP1 is not a good idea. Especially not over a triviality such as this. Features do not override stability, performance, and security.

Hi, Dougal. You will quickly learn that a lot of the advice you get over the Net needs to be evaluated by you properly, and see if it's something you want to do. My recommendation to all is, Partition your HD to where your OS is on a Logical drive by itself, for the Vista unfortunately has be around 30GB, and create an Image of your drive at least once a week, save it to your external drive, do the same with the rest of your Data / Logical drive and maintain your sanity. The problem with Vista 64 is that you will only find a few utilities that will work well with it, it seems like every time they SP it they mess something else up.Sargesky has a good caution, which applies in general anytime you do a repair, especially in Vista, or any other OS. Typically if a feature was / is part of the main OS it has about a 40% of getting repaired satisfactorily, meaning you can continue using the system, but it may still be a problem that will show up later. As to the "Search function" being a triviality, you can make that decision yourself, but it sounds like advice / opinion of someone that would accept anything, from anyone, that has an MS linked to the name, or probably never really used an OS of any kind. This may not be the only problem, it's what you see now, and if I could not resolve this, I would do a complete / new install, I would not accept it. You may also want to try and see if any Updates that they have out now will fix it, if you are willing to enable the Update feature and let MS take over your system. They seem have one almost every day TV

I'm not getting into a boxing match with you, but your baseless accusations do nothing to further this discussion and as such I have reported your post. The OP stated a problem to which you offered a resolution that in my PROFESSIONAL OPINION AS A PC TECHNICIAN find to be an absurd proposition, given the context. Dougal:if you would like to add search capability back to your start menu, I suggest you read the following website:http://www.petri.co.il/add-context-menu-se...s-vista-sp1.htm

you reported his post lol....
