zooming with the virtual cockpit

Recommended Posts

Guest william273

i'm finding that zooming out in the VC to .075 gives a new prospective and makes the cockpits look MUCH better. that makes a big difference when flying the defaults. anyone out there doing that? i might use that view as my default flying view. william

Yes, backzooming does always seem to help. It gives your virtual eye a little more peripheral vision. In fact, in FSX many of the aircraft are pre-zoomed out when you use the VC - they are already at 50-75%. -Greg

I thought that was the default zoom rate in the vc??

Yep, I always fly VC zoomed out to 75%. I like the look and feel of that as well.

It also helps to use the Shift + Backspace and Shift + Enter to adjust the height of the panel. Hold down the Shift key then press either the Backspace or Enter key. One lowers, one raises. Some add-ons like to put the VC too low IMO, but a few are too high. Just helps with the ability to see the gauges I think and the overall aspect.FYI, Track IR is the program to have if you prefer VC flying. I find the VC a little difficult to precision fly from, but the immersion is better and Track IR uses a little device that sits above your monitor and a reflector on you head (e.g., attached to a hat) to simulate head movement. When you turn your head, the VC pans. When you look up and down, the VC pans up and down. It's a fluid motion and probably makes VC flying much easier. Just tweak the sensitivity and decide what you're comfortbale with. You can even lean in to get real close to the instruments or look over the glareshield. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMKtkPR0idY

thanks chris. i have track ir but was but always kept the view up close as in the default view. i tried zooming back without track ir and liked it so now i just back up enough with it to get the same zoomed back view. it really takes the immersion factor up and gives a whole new look and feel. i also just bought a new 24 inch widescreen monitor last week and with all this together the realism is almost to much. william

I use a zoom of .50 in the vc on 22" widescreen at 1680x1050. I like the ground-rush feeling you got with a lower zoom, it seems much more realistic to my eyes.CheersJames

Zoom can be changed by re-saving the default flight (or a substitute) with your desired zoom setting. Eyepoint can be changed, aircraft by aircraft, by editing the "eyepoint" entry under the "views" section of the aircraft.cfg file. The three numbers are the displacement from the reference datum in decimal feet. I believe the last number is height.regards.

Saving the Flight does save the Zoom setting EXCEPT it always restores next time as one point below saved value- hence increase Zoom one point before saving! In Panel Config, the line VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=x.xxx, y.yyy, z.zzz is probably the line to which you're referring. X value sets height of the view- perhaps full screen height or only above the glare shield or part way- as you prefer. Espec. useful in aligning and synching multiple views with multi mons. +-y rotates or twists the view. Probably only used with multi monitor Views Left/Right Forward as a means of synching the horizons. Also useful for multi mon setups where the mons are angled or tilted. Should be 0 value for View Forward. Z sets the View Angle as referenced from straight ahead. NOT used for View Forward and should be 0 value. This value changes the View angle for VIEW_FORWARD_LEFT(RIGHT)_DIR and is the means of compensating for any combination of bezel widths in a multi mon config. In the process of making this adjustment, you automatically synchronize the horizons in roll and pitch modes for multi mons! I have programmed KB assignments so that the right up/down switch on the front of the CH yoke is used for view height- in KB assignments:Eyepoint Move Down is set to joystick button 06- Move Up is button 05.Space bar restores eyepoint to default. Trim Up/Down is set to the left horn rocker switch.Hope this helps. Alex Reid CYYJ

This is a good parameter to change if, for example, the panel blocks your view on final. The "eyepoint" line in the aircraft.cfg changes the view point for the VC. I'm a VC guys, so I assumed.....regards.
