I have a bit of difficulty flaring before landing because...

In my above post, when I said I was taught to look out of the side window, it was at an angle and down at the ground for height info. :-) --Roger

For a second I thought that you meant directly 90 degree from the fron windscreen and at the ground. When I did my float rating my first few landings that's what I did was look out the side window to see my height above the water. it was automaticaley, but it was a BIG NO NO, the reason being you never know what might pop out in front of your aircraft( on water a boat, or on land another aircraft, or wildlife) and then you wouldnt be able to correct acordibngly to avoid something not so pleasant.

A A320 pilot told me to look at the end of the runwayOn eye-point, what is the postion on fs9 vis-a-vis a real airliner ?CheersDave

The ATR-72-500 from Flight 1 has callouts, just like in real life...Best Regards, Donald T.:-waveFLYing? It's cool. Trillions of birds and insects can't be wrong.

Most of the payware airliners have callouts built-in.... :)Edit: Most or all of the ones I own, at least.....

Callouts really are the best aid to flaring before landing ....especially as we flightsimmers tend to fly more than one type of aircraft. For airliners they are essential IMHOThe callouts need to be accurate as well. On some of my aircraft where I have merged one aircraft with another the callouts may be out by only a couple of feet but it ruins the flare. Which goes to show how important they are.Check out this customiseable GPWS file : http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=...hor=&CatID=root

I was cleaning-out my bookmarks menu when I came across this article which was in AOPAFlight Training Magazine, ,June 2004. Read the paragraph that begins, "A slow gentle landing flare from..." I never thought of it this way when I learned to fly. I just did it. http://skyroamers.com/ralphinsights.aspxHope this helps some.--Roger

I don't mean to sound patronising, but you have to have a '6th sense' for how high the plane sits on the ground. Practise solves that problem. Take a little time to ajust for the different types of aircraft and how high they are. For example, the 747 sits pretty high up, so you'll have to compensate by flaring a bit earlier than normal, which the Learjet is quite low down, so you shouldn't have any trouble judging your flare. Also - if you're looking for the "50, 40, 30, 20, 10" voices you're on about, (it's called Ground Proximity Warning System, or GPWS for short), download some airliners, or, more specifally, some panels for them. There's more than enough here on Avsim.

haven't read all the replies and you've probably got it figured out by now but for flying large jets in general you don't have to flair much at all. if you can keep a 2-3 degree pitch attitude and your decent rates is correct you shouldn't have to do much just fly it on down to the pavement. william
