FSX AI Really Can Get It's knickers in a Twist

Featured Replies

They did some great things in some areas of FSX over FS9, but I do so wish a little more time had been spent on AI & ATC.This sucks after a long flight!

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

Such a bad landing, way off thze runway. :(

"Dougal",In spite of all my add-ons to try and make FSX "as real as it gets", it still has it's less than stellar moments to be sure. However, what I try to do, is treat FSX as it's "own world", where controllers are very, very bad, and get paid by the number of vectors, altitude assignments, heading changes, frequency changes (this especially when a route takes you "on the line" between ATC areas of control), near misses, and runway incursions they can cause. Now, the one thing I do carry over from realworld flight into flight-simming, is that the PIC has the right to refuse any instruction from a controller that they feel will compromise the safety of their flight (and yes, the pilot better have a good explanation when he gets on the ground in most cases). In the case you show with your pics, the thing to do should have been to execute a go-around rather than a forced landing off runway unless the incursions occured after you landed, in which case you did the right thing to clear the active and avoid a collision. To truly make it so that my flights have some consequence to them, I always fly with crash detection and aircraft collisions turned on (with the exception of turning off aircraft collisions for MP sessions, you never know if/when a trouble maker might show up). In this way, it becomes more important to make good decisions (and that includes refusing ATC instructions when necessary) in order to do what is necessary to conduct your flight "safely".This adds another level of immersion and realism in my book.In short, "take your lemons and make lemonade", and feel good whenever your good judgement as a PIC keeps your flight, and "passengers" safe. These are not opportunities to be disappointed, they are opportunities to show what a good pilot you are. :( Have a good day. :(EDIT: If in fact it was to late to go missed, then why not land on the traffic free parallel taxiway rather than on the grass and so close to the other aircraft? Something to think about. :(

'cos it was a 28kt x-wind landing :( :(

[EDIT]Plz disregard, I understood what you mean in the end. :( /Jonas

An old Douglas test pilot, WWII & Korean war vet, graciously let me have the last couple hours of his recurrent four hour sim session a number of years ago. As I settled myself in the left seat, he quickly made it clear that this was not going to be a joy ride. No sir, we'll fly this by the book (MD-88 sim). So, I followed procedures, setting the airspeed bugs each time etc. When we got done, he gave me some advice."You know the mechanics that work on these?""They are trying to kill you!""The Air Traffic Controllers?""They are out to kill you too.""The other pilots, the design engineers?""They are all out to kill you. If you keep that in mind at all times, you'll be fine."Noel WBrisbane

So . . . are you saying that the crosswind blew you off the centerline of the runway, or that it would have been too difficult to land on a PARALELL taxiway which is exactly the same approach heading as the runway. Hence, the term, parallel taxiway.I can assure you that the same 28kt crosswind would have existed over the taxiway as the runway, unless there was some kind of anomoly in the space time continuum at that moment, lol! :( That's the best answer you can come up with???? :( :( I think I'll catch a different flight than one of hops where you are the PIC, hehe. B) j/k B) @ "Gumps" (nice tag btw), What you said is so true. The fact of the matter is that the biggest leap of faith a pilot takes is that everyone else did their jobs right before they got in the aircraft, and that everyone will do their jobs right (that certainly includes the controllers) once they are airborne. The former is exactly why I was always a little bit apprehensive when it came to flying rental aircraft, no matter how thorough a pre-flight I did or how "good" the paperwork (maintenance logs) looked.Have a good day gents!

I'd be glad to have that much traffic! That is close to real world levels, with aircraft piling up at the holds! :(. Just make sure next time you execute a go around ;). Remember for ILS DH is usually 200ft, unless its a CATIII B or C app ;).
