Moving Map

Featured Replies

Hi Guys - I REALLY need a moving map for FSX that runs within the sim, not as a seperate application. All the ones iv found need another computer to run on (yeah, right), or only in FSX window mode.FSNav is FS9 was perfect - a quick stab of the pre-assign hot key popped up a map, and all was good. Nice and simple, with no mincing.FSMap works OK, but KILLS my framrate (every now and then!), and needs to be installed ontop of a panel. Not great. Please help me!

Flight Keeper. Has to be installed into your aircraft and is normally a 2D pop up panel, but can be installed in a VC if you really want it to be there. I never fly without it in an airliner, as its capabilities make things much more realistic for FS airliners. If you are serious about flying modern airliners in FS, then Flight Keeper is up there with TSR Aurobrake, the CS Weather Radar and the DBS Profile Radar as things that should certainly be on your shopping list.Al

I also vote for FSFK you really shouldn't be without it, the moving map/ACARS device is in every single aircraft in my hanger including small GA. FS Flight keeper is worth the asking price just for the above but there is a whole load more included in the same price, the included flight logging is second to none and that's still only scratching the surface of what is included in the package.Screenshot-18.jpgScreenshot-20.jpgScreenshot-23.jpg

Cheers, Andy.

Where is the FK gauge located? Could you show your FK panel.cfg code? Thanks.

Flight Keeper comes with a utility that does all the config stuff for you, so you don't have to worry about doing it all manually unless you want it in the VC. But if you really want to see the config code from one of mine, here it is:[Window Titles]window00=Main PanelWindow01=FMCWindow02=FSFK ACARS DeviceWindow03=Weather RadarWindow04=Profile Radar[Default View]X=0Y=0SIZE_X=8192SIZE_Y=3600Day=255,255,255Night=255,255,255[Window02]background_color=0,0,0window_size_ratio=1.0,1.0size_mm=508,381position=8visible=0ident=15372FSFKDevice=1gauge00=FSFK-ACARS!Device,0,0,508,381[Window03]size_mm=525,386window_size=0.44position=2background_color=1,1,1visible=0ident=11223zorder=1gauge00=WXR!wr_display, 81,32,364,279gauge01=Captain_Sim.r001.P04!P04_radar, 0,0,525,386[Window04]background_color=0,0,0window_size_ratio=1.0,1.0size_mm=300,150position=9visible=0ident=15372FSFKDevice=1gauge00=ProfileRadar.Sample!display,0,0,300,150To answer your other question, the FK ACARS gauge is in the FS gauges folder.Al

I am trying out the FK demo. I was wondering it this ACARS gauge is supposed to show the weather conditions?

Yes, you can get the weather info on the ACARS gauge, there are a few ways to go about that. What I typically do is create a flight plan and get a weather report in the Flight Keeper bit, connect ACARS to FS and then I can view the weather data for each waypoint along the flight route on the ACARS gauge as a METAR report for each waypoint. This is useful for getting en-route winds aloft data for an FMC when setting the thing up for automated flight, as it means VNAV and LNAV will perform better, which is why I do it.I never tried the demo, I just bought the full version straight away so, I don't know how functional the demo is as far as trying that is concerned.Al

To clarify the weather is not shown graphically as an overlay on the map, you can get weather reports though via the ACARS functionality. If this is what you are asking then I think you may have been confused by what you were seeing in one of the above images I posted. To make it a little clearer what you are seeing in the image below is the relative terrain altitude clearance to the aircraft, it is very handy when flying low vis approaches.Red means the ground is 100 feet or less away from your aircraft. Yellow is 100 to 1000 feet away. Green is 1000 to 2000 feet away. Transparent (white) is greater than 2000 feet away.Screenshot-18.jpg

Thanks. It's a very nice application.

Al,I was going to try the free demo, until I read the above you posted. I fly VC only with my TH2G. Are you saying I would have to manually add FK to EACH VC panel for every aircraft I want to use it in? How involved is the editing I would need to do for each VC panel.cfg file? That alone might be a show-stopper for me buying it.Or can the individual pop-up panels be used with a VC? If so, how are they "brought up"...keyboard shortcuts, menu selection from the top FSX menu, etc?Rick

Popup works in 2D and VC. They have a routine to actually add the gauge to all or selected aircraft.

To clarify: The utility in Flight Keeper is a simple tool which allows you to add the ACARS gauge as a pop up window to any aircraft, or you can add a clickspot to bring up the gauge instead. Like this, for example in the FSX Grumman Goose:acars1.jpgWhat that does is gives me this in the sim:acars2.jpgBut if I want the gauge to be visible on the panel in the VC (i.e actually part of the VC itself), then I would have to manually place the gauge into the VC by editing the panel config file to replace one of the gauges already in there with the ACARS gauge. To do that I would edit this bit of text:[VCockpit01]file=Grumman_Goose_Gauge_Backgrounds_1.bmpsize_mm=512,512pixel_size=512,512texture=$Goose_1background_color=0,0,0gauge00=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio Audio, 253,56, 258, 50 gauge01=Grumman_Goose_G21A!compass, 406, 0, 55, 38 gauge02=Grumman_Goose_G21A!flaps, 406, 120, 82, 82 gauge03=Grumman_Goose_G21A!ivsi, 292, 265, 113, 113 gauge04=Grumman_Goose_G21A!manifold_press, 16, 357, 107, 107 gauge05=Grumman_Goose_G21A!annunciator_panel_1, 0, 0, 259, 54 gauge06=Grumman_Goose_G21A!attitude, 153, 273, 109, 113 gauge07=Grumman_Goose_G21A!annunciator_panel_2, 261, 0, 143, 54 gauge08=Grumman_Goose_G21A!turn_bank, 19, 77, 112, 112 gauge09=Grumman_Goose_G21A!amps_volts, 272, 416, 75, 47 gauge10=Grumman_Goose_G21A!amps_volts2, 388, 417, 75, 47 gauge11=Grumman_Goose_G21A!carb_air_temp, 153, 411, 79, 79 gauge12=Grumman_Goose_G21A!cyl_temp, 158, 64, 79, 80 gauge13=Grumman_Goose_G21A!fuel, 161, 167, 77, 76 gauge14=Grumman_Goose_G21A!adf, 14, 214, 112, 111 gauge15=Grumman_Goose_G21A!oil_fuel_press2, 268, 125, 106, 106 and put this bit of text in there: FSFK-ACARS!DeviceDoing that would effectively be 'swapping' one of the gauges for the ACARS gauge, so I could for example, decide that I could live without the transponder panel on the radio stack and have the ACARS gauge in its place if I wanted to, or swap it for the ADF radio or whatever. There is no need to do that if you are happy to have the ACARS device as a 2D pop up panel, so unless you want to get fancy and put the thing actually in the VC somewhere, you can just use the simple utility in the first picture to do everything.Al

Yes you can assign a keyboard short cut to pop up the 2d panel if you wish too, i.e. Hold Shift then press a number from 1 to 9 to bring up the different panels. Personally I use on of the functions of the registered version of FSUIPC and assign a joystick button press to "Panel ID Toggle" with parameter "15372" which is the unique panel ID for the FSFK ACARS gauge.

Cheers, Andy.

Got it. Thanks all for the explanations.Rick
