Tacoma Narrows Airport

Featured Replies

Yup...I didn't get the jitters from the airport but I'm now getting them from even thinking about beta testing someone else's software :) I removed it too...Mark

Well I installed this airport and I will say it's not that bad. It looks pretty good, it has custom runway, apron, and taxiway textures. I don't really like the night lighting but thats ok for me because I hardly ever fly at night. The AFCAD could use some work but I am sure someone will make a good AFCAD for this scenery. If you like flying GA planes I say go ahead and install this nice little airport.I installed this scenery to a dummy folder then moved the scenery to my FS9 folder. When you do it this way you don't have to worry about the Update Manager dotnet version 3.5 thing that was mentioned before.

I installed it too and after a few modifications to the textures I have it so it will actually run on my machine so I'll be keeping it also. It's a nice airport and it's proximity to FlyTampa Seattle and Mark Smith's Bremerton National make it a nice GA destination for short VFR flights around Seattle. My FS computer is 7 yrs old and quite modest but it's capable of running FlyTampa Seattle or Flightscenery Portland. Depending on the complexity of the aircraft, I may have to sacrifice some clouds/weather but the airports are flyable. Unfortunately KTIW just wouldn't cut it in it's original state. Texture loading was taking something like 1/2 a minute every view change and I've never seen an airport with a worse frame rate impact on approach. The textures were all 1024x1024 DXT3s without mips which I always thought was a no-no for scenery textures. I spent a few hours selectively resizing them and processing them through imagetool to add mips. I reduced 17 of them which were basically all one color down to 128x128; 75 of them, mostly the building textures, look OK at 256x256; 5 of them went to 512x512; and the remaining 9 of the grass textures stayed full size at 1024x1024. I added mips to all of them. While I was at it I did hue & saturation adjustments to the grass textures making them a little greener for a better match to the surrounding GE Pro ground textures.Having done the above my frames went from roughly 3-5 fps on approach to upwards of 15 which still isn't great but it's bearable and about on par with some of my more complex payware sceneries. Yes, I really need to break down and build/buy a new computer for FS, but in all honesty I can't see much of a difference in quality of the airport using the reduced size textures over the originals. Computing horsepower isn't an acceptable substitute for scenery optimization, and if this were a payware airport I feel the designers would have severly limited their customer base by not providing an optimized texture set that runs well on lower-end machines like my own. Aside from that I am very pleased to have another high quality GA airport in the Seattle area, thank you Flyscenery!Jim

Ah...interesting stuff! I really hope that the FlyScenery people read this forum. They could get a lot of insightful help from a very diverse user base. Maybe that way, they won't go the automatic update route, (who knows why?), and get their textures to work like the pros.Mark

Thanks BTW Mark for being the guinea pig on installing this. It was nice to know what to expect and with your info I had the foresight to direct the installer to a temp folder and from there I just copied the scenery and texture folders to a new folder under Addon Scenery. I then ran the uninstaller which got rid of everything remaining in the temp folder as well as the start menu shortcuts.

Is there any files that fixes the bridge that near the airport? (the one shown in Jim Robinson's screenshot) One end of the bridge goes right into the side of a cliff. I have FS Genesis mesh for the area and it don't fix it.

We read your posts and here is some information you may be wondering. The jitters are not that serious. They are caused because our scenery lacks LODs, so it loads the whole .bgl. If you have a new system, you should get 46 to 49.9 FPS when locked at 50 FPS.I have to agree the installer is not the best there is, it doesn't even know where you FS folder even is. But hey it was free. Our webpage...well...err...ummThe update manager was made using Visual Basic, and some extra files are required if you wish to use it.What to expect on our next scenery...A better installerA better webpageSome better scenery texturesLODs, no jittersTell us if you find anything else to add to the list by the way nice work Jim Robinson, We'll have to try that out. =)

Hi Jim,I've just installed the Flyscenery Tacoma Narrows and I'd be interested in finding out which textures you resized to which specific size.Out of the three current sceneries for Tacoma Narrows this one has to be the pick of the bunch. Thanks for your help.Pete.

Wow, I saw your post and thought "there ain't a snowball's chance in h... I'm gonna remember that" but I opened up the texture folder and lo & behold found a txt file detailing exactly what I did. Don't know if you've ever used any FSDreamteam sceneries but for many there is a texture resizing toolkit available for download that does the dirty work on the whole folder in just a few seconds flat. If you're handy with batch files you could easily use this list to modify one of their scripts and make it work for KTIW.http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=2689.0Here's what I did, make backups first.Jim-------------------------------------------------------Reduce the following to 128x128:hanger_blue_blurold.bmphanger_blue_noise_lmold.bmplight_bloom.bmplight_bloom_green__lm.bmplight_bloom_lm.bmproofbrown.bmproofbrown_lm.bmprooftop.bmprooftop_lm.bmprooftopdark.bmprooftopdark_lm.bmptacoma_e_hangerinside.bmptacoma_e_hangerinside_lm.bmptacoma_photobasea_lm.bmptacoma_t_rooftop.bmptacoma_t_rooftop_lm.bmptarp.bmpReduce the following to 256x256:cracks.bmpfence.bmpfence_lm.bmpfence_tarp.bmpgas_station.bmpgas_station_lm.bmpgrass_sides.bmpgrassariel_lm.bmphanger.bmphanger_blue_blur.bmphanger_blue_noise.bmphanger_blue_noise_lm.bmphanger_blue_noiseold.bmphanger_building_parts_lightyellow_lm.bmphanger_building_parts_lightyellow.bmphanger_darkwhite.bmphanger_darkwhite_lm.bmphanger_lightblue.bmphanger_lightblue_lm.bmphanger_lightbrown.bmphanger_lightbrown_lm.bmphanger_lightwhite.bmphanger_lightwhite_lm.bmphanger_lm.bmphanger_parts.bmphanger_parts_brown.bmphanger_parts_brown_lm.bmphanger_parts_lm.bmphanger_white.bmphanger_white_lm.bmpligh_fixture.bmpligh_fixture_green.bmplight_fixture_RWY_center_lm.bmplight_fixture_twy_center.bmpobject3.bmpobjects.bmpobjects2.bmppavco.bmppavco_lm.bmproofedge.bmproofedge_lm.bmptacoma_c_parts.bmptacoma_c_parts_lm.bmptacoma_e_hangerparts.bmptacoma_e_hangerparts_lm.bmptacoma_e_hangerstairs.bmptacoma_e_hangerstairs_lm.bmptacoma_e_hangertext.bmptacoma_e_hangertext_lm.bmptacoma_e_hangerwall.bmptacoma_e_hangerwall_lm.bmptacoma_e_rooftop.bmptacoma_e_rooftop_lm.bmptacoma_g_parts.bmptacoma_g_parts_lm.bmptacoma_mettle.bmptacoma_mettle_lm.bmptacoma_mettledark.bmptacoma_mettledark_lm.bmptacoma_s_doors.bmptacoma_s_doors_lm.bmptacoma_t_parts.bmptacoma_t_parts2.bmptacoma_t_parts2_lm.bmptacoma_t_parts_lm.bmptacoma_tank.bmptacoma_tank_lm.bmptacoma_taxiwaysighns.bmptacoma_taxiwaysighns_lm.bmptaxiway_hold.bmptaxiway_line.bmptbar.bmptelephonepole.bmpwall_lightyellow.bmpwall_lightyellow_lm.bmpReduce the following to 512x512:grnd_marks.bmpground_rocks.bmprwy_markings.bmprwy_markings2.bmptacoma_photobasea.bmpLeave the remainder at 1024x1024:grass.bmpgrass2.bmpgrass3.bmpgrass4.bmpgrass5.bmpgrass6.bmpgrass7.bmpgrass8.bmpgrassariel.bmp
