How to pick SIDs and STARs?

Featured Replies

In the UK a SID is generally defined by it last waypoint. For example, At Heathrow (EGLL) there are Compton SIDs which end at the CPT VOR. These four SIDs (one for each runway and direction) are shown on one chart but identified as Compton 3F, 3G, 5J, and 4K for runways 27R, 27L, 09R, and 09L respectively. This enables a pilot to call for a Compton SID on the flight plan and be allocated the specific one by ATS.Also, in the UK SIDs are also reflect the Noise Preferential Routings as well so that following a SID complies with the Noise Abatement Requirements

Cool, thx Rick! Now I need to get alot of hours flying departures and Apprivals so I can get more comftable with changing things in flight and well all other general thing :)This navigation things are quite hard to get into in the beginning but for everything I read and watch it get

Rather than add more words, I thought I'd add some useful links for departure, route and arrival planning. They are useful but one continuing problem is that these sources can be using base data of different ages and that may be different again to the SID, airway and STAR data in your PMDG or Level D Flight Management System. All of that is likely to be different to the very limited number of detailed approaches known to FSX ATC!!To identify routes:http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/http://www.vatroute.net/For airport charts (including SIDS, STARS, transitions, approaches)http://usa-w.vatsim.net/charts/To create flightplans from a route & download into FS9 ATC, FSX ATC, PMDG FMS, LevelD FMS etc formathttp://www.simroutes.com/As regards this last item, it can be used to approximate a SID in your FSX ATC flightplan so that ATC doesn't try to send you off in a different direction before you have reached 5,000 ft.e.g. a route from Stansted to Frankfurt is: DVR UL9 KONAN UL607 SPI UT180 DITEL T180 OSMAX. Relevant Frankfurt STAR's then originate from OSMAX but you can't select one until you know the assigned runway i.e. when you get there. The Stansted DVR7R STAR can be approximated by: ISX225/2 DET336/30 DETso putting ISX225/2 DET336/30 DET DVR UL9 KONAN UL607 SPI UT180 DITEL T180 OSMAX into Simroutes and creating & downloading an FSX ATC flightplan from it gives you a pretty accurate route, even if you still need to sort out your approach when you get there!Sorry!!Stansted DVR7R SID [NOT STAR] is ISX225/2 DET336/30 DET.

Hi Mattias. Many very good explanations in here, so I will assume that you know what a SID/STAR is. I am actually at the office, so bare with me as I am going to make up SID/STAR and FIX names (for simplicity sake). I use FSCommander but you can use any flight planning tool for it. Let it generate a (high altitude) flight plan without inserting any SID/STAR. Now look at your first waypoint or fix in that flightplan and lets say it's KONAN and you are departing to the west. Now look up all available SIDs for your airport. You only will need those taking you out to the west, so that will eliminate a few. You will also see that there are "similar" SIDs depending on your runway but will get you to the same point. Lets say you have runways 9R-27L and 9L-27R. You will notice the "similar" SIDs. Lets name them 9R=ABBY1.KONAN1A, 27L=ABBY2.KONAN2A, 9L=ABBY4F.KONAN1C, 27R=ABBY4G.KONAN4C. My point here is that there usually is a SID that always takes you to the same inital FIX. (If there is none to, in this example, KONAN, look up the closest one to your route and modify your flight plan). Write those SIDs down. FSCommander can export flight plans to PMDG, thats why I said don't include SIDs/STARs in it. Now you are at your gate, load the flight plan into your FMC. Listen to ATC and your clearance. Ground will tell you "... taxi rnw 27R...". And now you know which SID to use 27R=ABBY4G.KONAN4C. Insert it into your FMC and you are done. Same thing applies for your STAR!!!I hope, I could help you out a little bit. This is how I do it.Greetings and have funJito13
