I don't understand your apprehension. A bit far away for ATC vectoring? Why do you think that? Surely Approach usually needs to vector traffic in the complete area under their jurisdiction. They need to get everyone routed to line up (the "string of pearls" effect at night) for a smooth sequence of handovers to Tower for the actual landing, and without conflict. Do you expect to do your own thing right up until Tower take over?RegardsPete

Hey Pete I was sort of vague in my description and keep in mind I have never actually flown a plane before but this is what I mean, I was flying to KMIA last night from KLAX the last waypoint of my flightplan was the DOLPHIN VOR which I was heading for, Approach then vectored me on to what I could only describe an a base leg for RW 8L about 30 nm from the airport. I was then told 27 nm from the marker fly heading 120 dec and maintain 1800 until established on the loc, now I have the ILS frequency dialed in but that far away there is no loc beam to pick up yet, flying a heading of 120 would have intercepted the loc if I was closer to the airport but like I said Im not picking anything up so after fly on a heading of 120 I had to turn myself onto final anyways.

Hmm. FS's LOC beams do extend around 25-30 nm, and I've never yet had a case where RC's vectors haven't got me into it. You might have been outside the zone when you first got the instruction, but the idea is that the vector it gives you takes you slap bang into it. With most airliners you'd want to be pretty near established 15 nm or so out, ready to intercept the GS from below.RegardsPete

I've had the same problem for years. I love the product, and it's my only complaint, but it is very frustrating to fly a long trip and then be turned to intercept the localizer at a distance that is just a little too far to recieve it. I then have to turn myself in after realizing I must have passed beyond it. I've asked if there was a way to shorten the distance...but have never heard back. It's kind of refreshing to hear that someone else has the same problem....although I'm sorry you are experiencing it too.

i thought i answered this a number of times. no there is no way to shorten this distance.it's extremely easy to fly though.in the rc display, you will see the distance and bearing to the airportyou will also see the distance, and localizer frequency.dial in the frequency.when the bearing to the airport is +/- 5 degrees of the runway heading, turn to a heading that matches the bearing to the airport.when the localizer is received, adjust left or right as necessary to join the localizer.jd

Ok thanks JD, this does not happen all the time just in some cases. Thanks guys

Thanks JD. That's an answer I've never seen. I appreciate the info. I usually dial in more when I'm turned to intercept the localizer...then wait to get yelled at...This should put me back in the good graces of the controllers!

i know, when you are approaching the airport +/- 10 degrees from the runway heading. all the 340 degrees are fine.jd

Only on a downwind leg you can go to menu page 2 and request "short final". Check out the RC 43 manual for how to use it with caution. It turns you on to base earlier and you'll need to go slower.
