CLS DC-10 - FSX-native?

Featured Replies

Hey all. Can anybody tell me definitively whether the DC-10 by Commercial Level Simulations is FSX-native? The product page says it's for FS9 and FSX. I found an old thread from when it was in development and back then CLS claimed it would be only for FSX. I know for a fact their 747 is not FSX-native. Hopefully someone can clear this up for me? The package looks very nice, but I only use FSX-native add-ons as a rule, no portovers.Thanks.

It's a nice package but definitely NOT FSX-native. It's not DX10 compatible too and they say that they hope Microsoft will fix this sometime in the future. Also, if you look on the product page, it requires FSUIPC to be installed and that was required for many FS9 and earlier products but Simconnect is used primarily for FSX. They CAN convert the textures to be DX10 compatible as other developers have done it. It works okay as long as you do not turn on DX10 preview. As I recall it was one of the first packages to be upgraded from FS9 to FSX and it was one of the first commercial addon packages I bought. All the other developers appeared to be waiting to see what SP2 would do before they released upgraded products from FS9 or developed a new product from scratch. Hope I was able to answer your qustion.Best regards,Jim Young

I honestly don't like it. The exterior model looks good, but the VC is disappointing. To my great surprise, I found that the CLS DC-10's VC pales next to Aerosim's DC-10 (screenshots can be seen here: http://www.avsim.com/pages/0909/Aerosim/CL2.htm). The only problem is amount of liveries.

I don't believe Aerosims DC-10 is for FSX. (Please correct me if I'm wrong) Thier The Boeing 777 for FSX looks like a very nice model though!!

No, sadly it's not... Well, it'll probably work, since it's not complex model. But it won't be supported. Needless to say, for a DC-10, I'd go with the Aerosim DC-10, not the CLS. I'm thoroughly disappointed with the quality of that VC. Also, the systems don't seem to great to me (I think I managed to fly a complete flight with the battery turned off and I didn't even notice it...) and I reall think the Aerosim exterior model is about as good as CLS's. Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I dislike the CLS DC-10. I love their Classic 747, but many of their other products have just been a disappointment, honestly.

I guess what I'm asking is if the model is compiled using the FSX SDK, whether or not it's compatible with the DX10 preview...I know there are a fair number of models which are technically FSX native (and thus have features like bump-mapping, self-shadowing, etc) but still won't work with DX10. I note in the Avsim review of the package, there are some references that suggest the package is FSX-native.
Visually, the external model seems to look really good in FSX and incorporates some of the new features of FSX. The lighting also uses some of the new FSX features and it was nice to see the entire plane, including the passenger compartment, all lit up.
I'm not terribly concerned with the DX10 preview, really. The reason I insist on FSX-native models is for features like bumpmaps and self-shadowing, and most importantly, performance...many portovers cause a frame drop.Badaboom, yes, Aeorsim's Triple Seven does look nice, but unfortunately it seems to only come with a "house" livery and there are hardly and repaints available that I can find.

I am trying to find more to add to the statements concerning the virtual cockpit. It is about the only thing I have going for flying a KC-10 in FSX. There are multiple pop-ups for the Flight Engineer panels since you cannot effectively use them in VC and as an F-Lite, the CLS DC-10 was purposely designed without complex systems. The engines sound just like the last KC-10 I saw. I do use the FedEx repaints for my simulated cargo operations.

The cls dc-10 was originally going to be fsx only but they changed there mind back then, it is unfortunately not a fsx native model it is a fs9 port and most ports don't preform to well in fsx I do like the package its not the best the vc could have been better.I also got it for the fact that it has some very nice repaints and the model was good also, what put me off with the aerosim package is the lack of livery's. but the cls dc10 does work in fsx, I honestly don't do my airliner flying in fsx due to my system limiting me so I use it for vfr stuff and sometimes small airports that airliners use. There is one dc10 that I have been waiting for many years recently they added a new member last year I believe, it was Jacob Kubique he is the model designer for the virtual cockpits in the project opensky ERJ and Boeing 777, Justflight/CLS 747-200-300 and also the upcoming qualitywings 757 he does very beautiful work and he did in awesome job with the dc10 vc http://www.xsimulate.net/index.html

Wow. That's worth a Captain Picard facepalm right there. Talk about backwards. Talk about a disappointment.Oh well, on the bright side, I guess I just saved $40 or so. Thanks for the information, everyone.

Liveries is an enormous problem with Aerosim products, I agree. In all the reviews I did, this single issue just kept creeping up, although their Tristar seems to have quite some repaints. For the DC-10 I don't think it's that bad either, but it certainly could have had more.

Their Saab 340 isn't bad either but there are very few repaints as well.Does anyone have any idea what CLS is going to do next? I Love their 747 package and I agree it is big step above their DC10. I wish more developers would make aircraft that had a smaller learning curve than the PMDG stuff. I just don't have the time for 100 page manuals and 1 hr pre flights. It seems like everything that is being done today tries to replicate every ac system and for me (and I know I am not alone), it is just too much to learn if you want to have a lot of variety in your fleet. I was really excited about the QW 757 - it seemed like it was going to be a high quality aircraft that was light on the systems modeling but it now looks like they have given in to the squeaky wheels and decided beef up the systems modeling. Hopefully their FMC will allow the import of a FS flight plan. If not, I probably won't be buying it. They did mention the forum that they may have two panel versions so we'll see.

It's funny you should mention their Saab 340: I wrote a review about the Aerosim propliners collection and I submitted i a few days ago. I expect it to appear within a month. Their DHC-6 is fantastic. I'm sure it's their most detailed FS2004 plane and it's great fun to fly it. It even has a cabin and all! Really, I love that thing the detail of the VC is amazing. Problem is, I spotted only 1 repaint for it in the AVSIM library... We need more liveries for it and soon. I'll repaint it in the end, but I don't have time, since I have other reviews to attend too which are far more important at the moment (next to my biology study, orchestra and some other stuff I do). I fully attend to do a Logan Air and SLM repaint of that plane, though, and if people have any requests, I might do those too. When the time's ripe, I'll ask around, if people have any wishes.By the way, that Saab 340 indeed is quite nice. For the entire propliners collection there is one golden rule: don't forget to lower the prop condition levers! FS puts them standard on 100% -.-
