September 30, 200916 yr Author OK, so I'm now running FSX from my newly installed SSD drive and all went fine moving the data from the old disk to the new disk.As for the performance I was honestly hoping for a bigger improvment over my old VelociRaptor but sure there is an improvment especially when it comes to load times so I'm happy!

Running defrags on the SSD puts unnecessary write cycles on the array, and will cause your write performance to degrade over time. It's unneeded because, as a random access device, a defrag does absolutely nothing to improve read performance.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case
September 30, 200916 yr Author Thanks Bob but I already learned that and I'm not using any 3rd party defrag programs. Interesting though is when I went into Windows 7's defrag schedule to make sure it wasn't checked the SSD disk was not on the list? However it's listed together with my other disks before I click the schedule button. So...at least that to me mean I don't have to worry about my SSD being automatically defragmented.
October 1, 200916 yr Richard,Have you noticed an increase in frame rates in larger airports like klga. Also please give me your feedback as per texture loads when doing fast looks or quick panning.I'm going with 2 Patriot Torqx in a Raid O. I hope that they are as reliable as my raptors. MSFS

Not only does defrag on the SSD degrade performance, it can reduce the lifespan of the drive significantly. http://www.guru3d.com/article/corsair-x128-ssd-review-test/3Colonel,They recommend disabling drive indexing, prefetch and superfetch. I am wondering what the impact is on OS performance when you have a mixture of standard hard drives with a SSD thrown into the mix. Have you followed these recommendations by the reviewer? Scott KGPI

I am wondering what the impact is on OS performance when you have a mixture of standard hard drives with a SSD thrown into the mix. Have you followed these recommendations by the reviewer?I think those recommended actions are for those who run their OS on the SSD. For FS use, an SSD is ideal, since FS9 and FSX do very little writing to disk...the majority of the workload is scenery, terrain, and texture reads, and the SSD is lightning fast for those. The OS (Vista 64 HP) runs on a 300GB VelociRaptor, where it writes the paging file, the steady stream of MS updates, etc. I always disable drive indexing on my FS machines, and I leave the pre/super-fetch alone, as it works pretty well on a machine dedicated primarily to FS use.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO Bob Scott | President and CEO, AVSIM Inc ATP Gulfstream II-III-IV-V Sys1 (MSFS20+24/XPlane12+11): AMD 9800X3D, water 2x240mm, MSI MPG X670E Carbon, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, nVidia RTX4090FE Alienware AW3821DW 38" 21:9 GSync, 2x4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2x2TB Samsung 990 SSD, EVGA 1000P2 PSU, 12.9" iPad Pro Thrustmaster TCA Boeing Yoke, TCA Airbus Sidestick, Twin TCA Airbus Throttle quads, PFC Cirrus Pedals, Coolermaster HAF932 case Sys2 (P3Dv5/v4): i9-13900KS, water 2x360mm, ASUS Z790 Hero, 32GB GSkill 7800MHz CAS36, ASUS RTX4090 Samsung 55" JS8500 4K TV@60Hz, 3x 2TB WD SN850X 1x 4TB Crucial P3 M.2 NVME SSD, EVGA 1600T2 PSU Fiber link to Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theater Receiver, Polk/Klipsch 6" bookshelf speakers, Polk 12" subwoofer, 12.9" iPad Pro PFC yoke/throttle quad/pedals with custom Hall sensor retrofit, Thermaltake View 71 case, Stream Deck XL button box Sys3 (DCS/P3Dv4/ATS/ETS): AMD 7800X3D, MSI MPG X870E Carbon, Noctua NH-D15S, 64GB GSkill 6000/30, EVGA RTX3090 Alienware AW3420DW 34" 21:9 GSync, Corsair HX1000i PSU, 4TB Crucial T705 PCIe5 + 2TB Samsung 970Evo Plus, TM TCA Officer Pack, Saitek combat pedals, TM Warthog, TM RS300 FF wheel/pedals, Coolermaster HAF XB case

What I did notice so far is like said above that the load times have improved, not as much as I was hoping for but still a bit anyway. And just knowing I have FSX installed on a disk that is like a rocket when it comes to random reading gives me a good feel in the stomach and what I also like is I don't have to bother anymore with making sure the FSX disk is perfectly defragged all the time. Will report back if I find anything else after the weekend.
October 2, 200916 yr Author Bob,I have a follow-up question, what block size did you choose for your FSX SSD drive?
