Lo Speed Protection on Short Final

Featured Replies

Once in a blue moon, for no reason I can attribute to weather at all, the MD-11 will slowly bleed off speed on final when configured for landing. It's like the ATS forgets it has control over the speed. Once in a while it will kick in once it enters yellow and push back up to normal Vapp, but other times, like tonight, it will just keep slowing until Lo Speed comes on and the thrust pushes it into what seems like G/A mode. I have to disengage ATS or I have no control over my speed. I went from 159 for Vapp to well below in the yellow until the protection came on and pushed me above 180 knots, which was almost yellow in the opposite direction for my configuration (flap 35).What the heck is going on? I have all my weather smoothing and adjustments sets in FSUIPC and ASA so I get no unstable Wx data. The landing wind at KMCI was around 3 knots headwind.

No, totally disabled. I turned that off back when AS first included it in their program because it gave me trouble then. I also have wind smoothing and baro smoothing on a significant setting. This has seemed to occur when everything was good weather wise and nothing was wrong visually with the plane (no EAD alerts, ect...)

Chris, does this happen on both autoland and manual landings? Could it be your hardware throttle lever is interfering with ATS? Or did you set the throttle lever not being able to override ATS within the PMDG menu?Regards,Markus

Never run into this problem using ATS untill touch-down.(Just using default FSX and PMDG's MD11 with RealWorld procedures)Regards,Harry

I would have to say with 99% certainty that my hardware isn't interfering with the throttle. I have nulls, use FSUIPC, and have the option to override set to Never on both throttle and yoke. I can move my throttle all over the place during ATS-controlled flight and the MD ignores it wonderfully. I just know this isn't the problem.Anyhow, my landings are always Manual w/ATS on. I'd say ATS works to hold the proper Vapp speed regarldless of pitch 90% of the time or more. I have no idea how many flights I've done, but a handful have had this happen for some unknown reason. Sometimes it seems like it has something to do with my approach having been a little high, but I can't say for sure. For example, ATC doesn't clear me down fast enough and I end up about 1000 feet above the FMS calculated constraint for my FAF. This of course requires some catching up, but nothing to drastic, just maybe a 1500 FPM sink rate to meet my constraint in time for the proper glide path. It's almost as if the FMS and ATS are telling the plane to stay in idle thrust because I'm too high according to the IAPs predicted/required altitude, then regardless of how this is managed, catching up and washing off the required altitude doesn't seem to register with the ATS so it kicks back in. If I'm left too high and I know it based on ATC and my profile, I will enter a hold at a fix such as the IAF/transistion. This isn't always the best thing to simulate a real world scenario, but it's the best trade off to avoid a G/A and some IAFs do have holds. This gives me time to lose the necessary altitude and start my final. Last night I don't even think I was too high by more than a few hundred feet, I just never leveled off after slowing below 10,000. It ended up being a CDP below 10,000 all the way to the G/S, in which case I just had to pitch up slightly to maintain the glidepath. That pitch up obviously requires some thrust to keep the Vapp, but it never happened. It just stayed in idle. It really seems like ATS just falls asleep once in a while.

Chris: What is the FMA indicating? See explanation of different annunciations starting on page AUTO.30.27 in the Systems manual.

Chris,I'd love to see a screenshot of the main panel (especially PFD) when ATS falls asleep, right before ATS would kick in the low speed protection...Markus

I know, I really should've paused the sim and captured the screen, I was just so focused on what was happening and trying to correct it. Fortunately it doesn't happen very often, unfortunately that makes it hard to get a screen shot since I have no idea how to replicate it. All my flights are flown the same way, using the same procedure.I'll make sure I capture it next time though.
