Intrested in buying the PMDG MD-11 for FS9

Featured Replies

Hey there,I am very intrested in buying the PMDG MD-11 for FS9, I currently own the PMDG 737NG Series and the PMDG 747 and I love both...My only concern is I am not a Virtual Cockpit person...It causes bad FPS etc etc...I was curious if the MD-11 has an option like past products for choosing the 2D panel with the wingviews..or is this model just one that comes with the VC regardless...Let me know guys!ThanksCraig Galka

Craig,My experience with the MD-11 is FSX, but I thought this would be helpful: I actually think the MD-11 is easier to use in the 2D mode. There are a ton of sub-windows in this aircraft that, while you can get to via the VC, they are easier to get to (and use) when in 2D. For example, to start the engines, you have to open the thrust console, then click on a sub-panel for startup, which opens windows with the EICAS, the start buttons from below and the ignition from the overhead.I actually prefer the VC normally, but the MD-11 I use both. I pre-flight and start-up with the 2D, take-off in VC, fly largely in VC, switch to 2D to set up approach, and then switch back to VC for the landing. So, suffice to say, its a very 2D friendly plane.

The MD11 can be flown from 2D panels; in fact, I didn't convert to VC until the JS41 came out with a VC designed for FSX that blew me away. Anyway, if you like the 747 I think you should be very happy with the MD-11 as long as you are mindful that it is a different airplane and setting up the FMS is different. There's plenty of help available in the manual and here to make the transition. Happy contrails.

Thanks for the quick replies....What I am looking for is just to have the 2D panel without the VC...meaning is there an option to select the MD-11 in 2D panel without having the VC while switching views...like for example...Can I have the option to have the 2D panel then when I switch to the VC can I see wingviews? Without the VC

No, but as the developers have pointed out several times here after release, the VC does not affect performance when not viewed. I started beta testing the MD11 with a single core P4 and I didn't have any problems in FS9 and performance in FSX was better than the 747X. However, if you strictly do not want VC then I don't have an answer for you.

Ok nice...thanks guys!

Ok one more question....If i buy this and I get around 66FPS locked with FS9 normally..What would u think my FPS would be when running this in VC mode? Here is my setupDell XPS720Intel Dual Core E6850 3.0GHZNvidia 8800GTX2 Gig RAM22 Inch MonitorWindows XP SP3FS9.1

There is not much in common between frame rates and stutters. A stutter is usually caused by the CPU not keeping up with the visuals so the GPU just holds on to what it has whereas a frame rate measure is like an overall barometer of video stream throughput that actually varies significantly but the number is smoothed by MSFS. I'm no expert, but if you have stuttering at all then it is definitely not a GPU problem. A frame rate of 20 (even lower in FSX) can look very fluid and flicker free if there are no stutters; but if you have stutters then no value of frame rate is sufficent.

Just one thing to note - you won't get wingviews in the FS9 version. This has come up numerous times.John Ellison

Hello,I have about 100 hours flight time in the PMDG MD-11 in FS9 (I very seldom fly FSX although I have it on my computer). I am very satisfied. Like you I prefer 2d cockpits with separate side views (not the vc). But this is not possible here. However the good news are that the vc is very fps friendly, so changing view from front view to side view is almost stutter free (I have a very powerful computer though). I have locked frame rates to 50 fps, and even at complex airports I get this frame rate.I enjoy flying the PMDG MD-11 immensely. It feels very realistic. I doubt that a simulation on a home PC could be more realistic than this.May I recommend that you buy the dvd "Swiss MD-11" from Just Planes (you follow a long-haul flight Zuerich-Sao Paolo-Buenos Aires and back). You will get more feeling when flying MD-11 after seeing this video. I think this video is one of the absolutely best cockpit videos on the market.Merry ChristmasKrister Renard
