Capturing the GS

Featured Replies

Hello, I love this new J41 and I'm flying it exclusively these days. I have had a reoccuring issue however. When turned toward final approach by ATC (Radar Contact) I have been 1) to far away from airport to capture the localizer, I stay on the course given to intersect but localizer never comes alive and I end up flying of course until I disconnect AP and fly back to runway. I think this is more of an RC issue.2) I've been lined up with the runway, localizer comes alive but the GS doesn't. I get the green "GS" and see the glidescope move but the plane doesn't track it. Am I doing something wrong? I have the APP armed and then is goes to CAP, but nothing from the GS, I just watch as I sail over the runway. anyone have this issue? I know some airports don't has GS and I can see the red GS when they don't but the last few at both Jacksonville and Tampa should have worked?ThankJay Vasto

Jay,I think the problem is that you are capturing the G/S (indicated by the Green G/S) prior to Localizer capture. There is a safety feature built in to the aircraft to not allow the aircraft to track the G/S until Localizer Track to avoid CFIT (Controlled Flight Into Terrain). I believe (and correct me if i'm wrong J41 drivers) that you should be using Heading Select or LNAV to capture the Localizer, once the Localizer is alive, you can activate the approach mode and it should work properly.

I suggest you get a chart of the approach you are trying to fly. Figure out where you are with respect to the final approach fix. Try to intercept the localizer two or three miles outside the FAF and be at the glideslope intercept altitude. You should get the glideslope at the FAF.The FAA has an excellent guide on all things IFR. Google the Instrument Pilots Handbook.

thanks gents, i'm give that a try.Jay Vasto

With RC4 this is how I fly the approach:

  • while in heading mode and being vectored: put the ils id in the flightplan.
  • select direct to the ils
  • set the hdg in the fms
  • once you cleared for the approach arm nav
  • intercept the localizer
  • once the glideslope comes alive and you are under it, select APP

Works all the time, never got any problem with this method.
