August 18, 201015 yr Author Ok, than I think I'll go with an i5 750 or 760.Is 4GB of RAM enough or should I go for more?Cheers,Cristi
August 19, 201015 yr Hey Cristi,Have a look at this link, it may be of some help to you in your decision:http://www.jetlinesystems.com/performance.html Jeff BaumgartnerASUS Rampage II Extreme, i7 980x Gulftown OC @ 4.06Ghz,6GB Tri Channel, GTX 480 Fermi2x100GB SSD Hard Drives, Antec 1200 PSU, Corsair Hydro H50 Win7 64bit, FSX, AS2012, FSC, FTXG, PMDG-744, 748i, 744 LCF. August 19, 201015 yr jetlinesystems sell computers for a living if you know what I mean4GB of ram is more than enough, and I'm pretty sure RAM speed is not a factor either, let alone tripple channel
August 19, 201015 yr I know....I was just suggesting the sight because it helped me when I was trying to figure out how to set up my rig. (not this one of course...lol). I like the fact they tested different configs and show the performance of those different setups. August 19, 201015 yr Ok, than I think I'll go with an i5 750 or 760.Is 4GB of RAM enough or should I go for more?Cheers,CristiDepends on your operating system and what you’re running on your PC. The full 4 gig won't be used if you’re running a 32 bit OS. I would recommend windows 7 64 bit as this would use the entire 4 gig. More is obviously better when it comes to memory, 6 gig is probably the performance standard now on a 64 bit OS, but 4 gig would be just fine.A word of warning.....If you go for an MSI board with an i5 750, OC genie will only clock you up to about 3.2 GHz, it may also screw your memory timings so its not all usable. There's plenty of info out there for over clocking an i5 750, but be prepared to have to "tweak" a little bit. "Military Intelligence is a contradiction in terms" Paul Yates
August 19, 201015 yr Commercial Member CPU: Intel I5 750 (or 760)MOBO: Asus P7P55DRAM: 4GB Video: Nvidia GTX460 1GbDoes this sound better?I just want to ask one more time, just to be 100% certain: at the same frequency there is no boost in performance between an i5 and and i7 processor (no benefits from using DDR3 memory and HT).. Is there any point going for more RAM? (6 or 8 GB) Is there any point in using DDR3 RAM? I noticed DDR2 RAM frequencies only go up to 800Mhz...Thanks,CristiCristi,Yes I think that's a good build right there. The 460 is by all accounts a really great card, I'd definitely get it over any of the ATI stuff right now.You will not miss anything from the triple channel or hyperthreading etc that an i7 9xx has - the memory stuff is a very small improvement and the hyperthreading really doesn't help FSX at all. On the RAM, get DDR3-1600 if you can, that takes the RAM totally out of the overclocking equation - lower speed RAM is going to actually overclock technically too as you push up the bus speed and it can be a source of instability. Better to just get RAM that's rated for 1600 and not worry about it - you won't exceed 1600 RAM speed OCing on air. What you do need to do is make sure you buy a good heatpipe tower based CPU cooler for this, that's the key to getting the chip up around 4GHz where it needs to be. The ones I originally mentioned are still some of the best - the Megahalems and the Venomous X etc.A word of warning.....If you go for an MSI board with an i5 750, OC genie will only clock you up to about 3.2 GHz, it may also screw your memory timings so its not all usable. There's plenty of info out there for over clocking an i5 750, but be prepared to have to "tweak" a little bit.Yeah I agree here - don't use any software based OCing crap that comes with the mobo - do it all through the BIOS. You may have to read a bit or watch some youtube tutorial videos but this is the correct way to OC, not through software. August 19, 201015 yr An i5 750 does not have hyperthreading capabilty... (it's a quad core anywhay, so FSX wouldn't use hyperthreading) DDR 3 memory is a must if your running an i5 750 as DDR 2 is not compatible with the motherboard (1156 chipset) "Military Intelligence is a contradiction in terms" Paul Yates
August 19, 201015 yr ... you don't need triple channel or HT for FSX ...You don't "need" need them, but they help if you've got them, and they help everything else the PC has to do. Paul Smith.
August 19, 201015 yr Author Thanks to everyone for their input - I am placing the order tomorrow.@Ryan - thank you for your thoughtsYes I intend to get DDR3-1600 Memory and I'm thinking about something with 8-8-8-24 timings.I also intend to get a good cooler, I was thinking about a Noctua, but I will also check your recomandations about the Megahalems and the Venomous X.I also have a little offtopic question about my bought PMDG products Md11 and J41. Will I have any trouble reactivating them on the new PC?Cheers,Cristi
August 19, 201015 yr You don't "need" need them, but they help if you've got them, and they help everything else the PC has to do.it depends on what apps you are running. Software can't be taken out of the equation. I may be missing something but for what I know you'll have a hard time at finding software that takes advantage of the increased memory band width that tripple channel provides, except for sinthetic benchmarks of course. As for HT not everything will use that either. FSX will notAnd I didn't know the OP was overclocking, if that's the case high speed rated RAM is needed as Ryan said. I wouldn't worry about getting low latency sticks though
