February 1, 201016 yr Hi everyone! I built a new system consisting of the following components:HAF932 CaseAsus P6X58Di920 CPUMushkin Redline 6GB 6-7-6-18Corsair 850HXRadeon HD5870Noctua NH-D14WD VelociRaptor 300GB(FSX)WD Black 640GB(WINDOWS 7, 64Bit)Dell 24" MonitorCPU overclocked to 4.2 stable and not exceeding 75-76C under prime95HD5870 on 10.1 drivers and overclocked to 875MHz/1300MHzSystem memory running at spec 1600 6-7-6-18Texture_Bandwidth_Mult=80I'm very happy with the performance of FSX getting around 30-40fps around the airports at low altitude with add-on aircraft/airports and full assortment of scenery/weather enhancements and 90-100fps at high altitudes; most all sliders at max, but I think there is room for improvement. Getting some what looks like glimmering in the scenery and on some of the buildings roofs. I'm not running any AA or AF...I haven't touch any other settings in the Catalyst Control Center other than the over-clock. Just wondering if there are any good or ideal settings in the CCC for AA, AF etc. Thanks for any help! February 1, 201016 yr Definitely need to turn on AF and probably even SSAA to take care of texture shimmering.
February 1, 201016 yr My cards slows down terribly with Supersampling enabled, which is a shame. But I am using 3 monitor Eyefinity so your mileage may vary.
February 1, 201016 yr Instead of SSAA you can use one of the hybrid modes designed to address alpha texture aliasing, but you're still likely to get some degree of texture shimmering without true SSAA.
February 2, 201016 yr Author Thanks for the suggestions. Turned on 2X SSAA and 4X AF. Most of the shimmering is gone but cut my fps almost in half. But surprisingly still very smooth even in the most dense scenery areas. External views are jerky.Still need to fool around with these settings. Thanks AMD 7900X | ASRock Steel Legend X670E | G.SKILL 32GB DDR5 6000 | MSI 6950XT | Noctua NH-D14 EVGA Super NOVA 850W | Cooler Master HAF932 | Hisense 43" 4K UHD | Win11
February 2, 201016 yr 4x AF isn't enough, go to 16x for the full effect. Also, try one of the hybrid AA modes instead of SSAA. Looks like to run SSAA smoothly in FSX you need a 5970.
February 2, 201016 yr I have a 5970 with Eyefinity and any sort of supersampling clips my framerates horribly, I run 8xAA and 16x AF with frames at about 30 over default terrain, but with 4xS AA I am down to the low teens.Am I doing something wrong?
February 2, 201016 yr Is CrossfireX enabled in the Catalyst Control Center, or did you disable it for MSFS? If it's disabled that would explain the low performance with SSAA, but if enabled I guess even the mighty 5970 can't handle SSAA with FSX. Probably a software issue, one unlikely to ever be resolved given the current state of flight simming and the stance of the two dominant GPU IHVs WRT this market.

Looks like to run SSAA smoothly in FSX you need a 5970.Well, tried 2X SSAA and 16X AF and a definite improvement in visual quality with minimal or no loss of fps. Strange. Tried 16X SSAA "wide-tent" and was visually stunning but fps in the single digits and not really smooth... What do you mean by hybrid AA modes? Is that the Adaptive Multi-Sample? ThanksYes, Adaptive AA is ATi's hybrid AA implementation. Give it a shot. You can use either multi-sample or super-sample (MSAA and SSAA, respectively) for Adaptive AA. Adaptive MSAA won't have nearly the performance impact of Adapter SSAA, though. It's also less likely to clean up texture shimmering so pick your poison there.
February 3, 201016 yr Commercial Member I don't know if this problem exists on the 5 series too, but the only way I get AF in FSX on my 4870 is by setting it in the sim and leaving CCC set to Use Application Setting. Forced AF has been broken for many driver versions now in FSX. Forced AA does work however. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
