Creating LODs with FS Design Studio

Featured Replies

Hello,I want to make a hangar-model with LODs in FSDS 3.5.1. I made three models and called them according to the help-files with xxx_LOD_400, xxx_LOD_100 and xxx_LOD_010. I compiled the mdl, took it in a library and placed it with InstantScenery. But unfortunatly this doesn't work in FSX (+Acc.). I always see the original model, but not the LOD-models.I read somewhere that LODs didn't work in FSX (+Acc.). Is this really true? Or has someone found a solution for that? Honestly I cannot believe that it will not work!Bernhard

Nope doesn't work for scenery in FSDS 3 or higher. It is my understanding that LODs for scenery were possible with earlier versions of FSDS, but for some reason, they did not include this functionality in the new version. It is very frustrating not to be able to use them for scenery because they do work for regular aircraft and AI models.

Scenery LODs don't work in FSX period, irrespective of the modeling program... :(

No.....you're wrong. Scenery LODs DO work in FSX. Look at Farfy's site:See here :( He has made a brandnew tutorial about that theme. Look also for his other tutorials they are very informative!Bernhard

I stand by what I wrote. Using the procedures outlined in the FSX SDK, LODs do not work. The "trick" mentioned in the tutorial is simply that, a trick. It works only because it's forcing the sim to redraw the scene because of the tiny animated invisible part.So yes, although the kludge works, it should not have been necessary, had ACES not broken the LOD system... :(

Bill, your answer is not fair. If you have knew this trick and didn't told it to me/others, than this is a bad behavior. Something of holding back a special knowledge and didn't tell others about it.If you havn't knew the trick than you must be happy that someone found it. This trick makes many people happy. There are lots of FSX sceneries which work with LODs, so it must work in FSX (even with a trick). And I think there are lots of tricks which professional designers use in FSX to enhance their work. And I don't think that these are dirty tricks. I'm sure, that FS was filled with faults from start on so one must live with those tricks.Bernhard

I (dimly) remember reading the post at FFDS a very long time ago now that my memory has been jogged. I read as many as 500 posts ever single day, seven days a week. I cannot possibly remember everything I've read, especially several years later... :( In short, what I originally wrote is precisely correct insofar as how the SDK's LOD method is broken. I didn't hold back any knowledge of the "trick," I simply forgot about it!My main FS focus is aircraft modeling and gauge/systems programming. I've only dabbled very occasionally with scenery design...Now, that said I'll say no further on the matter, nor will I bother posting in the Scenery Forum here any longer. :(

Come, Bill, please relax, sit back, sip a small glass of sherry (or whatever you like), and please put it all in perspective. We all enjoy having you here, so don't get cranky on us now, and stick around.Best regards.Luis
