ATI grey screen with green lines issue-any updates?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,I have seen a very large number of forum postings about this issue with which I am sure those of you having ATI cards of the 5000 series are familiar. I currently have an NVidia card but was thinking about changing to ATI 5770 1GB when I upgrade. This card is the most energy-efficient and best performing for the money today. But completely by accident, I saw an enourmous no. of people, with different system configurations, different games (not just FS), different graphics card mfg. all having this issue. The video cuts to a grey screen (possibly also with green lines across it) in the middle of a game, or even in 2D mode.Have any of you who had this problem tried the Catalyst 10.2 or the latest Catalyst drivers and has seen it disappear? There are many "solutions" out there but none are solutions by ATI/AMD, just user solutions so I wanted to inquire before making a purchase decision. Some even said it may be a voltage issue. I just called ATI tech support and asked them if they had any news about this issue, and to my ASTONISHMENT, the tech support guy on the phone said that he "did not know" about this issue! Any input would be appreciated. Thanks,John

Have you upgraded your drivers yet to Catalyst 10.2 and if so, is your video stable after the upgrade?
Yes, I installed them on Windows 7 64 and XP/SP2 64-bit and haven

Hotfixes for other cards in the 5000 series will be released as they're available. The 5700 series will soon receive it's hotfix for the same issue.

"Is anyone using 5770 series cards now with FSX and if so, can you please post here to let me know if you are having any freezes, grey screens with stripes or GPU recover errors. Sometimes, people have reported these errors after 2 hours of play, sometimes after just 10-20 minutes."I am running a 5870 with Catalyst driver 10.3. OS is W7 64, dual monitor setup. I had immediate GPU recovery errors and green stripes running downwards on the second monitor, but only when let ATI Overdrive figure out (Auto-Tune) what the maximum is my systen tolerates (GPU clock 920 MHz, Memory 1380 Mhz). When I set it back to defaults (850/1200) the ATI 5870 works perfectly and FSX runs very smoothly.agutz

Sorry, there is a mistake in the post above. It should read: "I am running a 5770 with Catalyst Driver 10.3 ...."agutz

Hello everyone,I wanted to update those of you who are considering purchasing an ATI 5770 series card. I got the Sapphire HD 5770 1GB card and have used it for a good month or more now and I have not had any issues whatsoever with any crashes or freezes. I play FSX acceleration pack, with Amsterdam X by Aerosoft, Paris CDG from Aerosoft, PMDG 744X, Radar Contact and a few other free-ware airports. The card is great and works without any issues on my 500-Watt Antec power supply. This is why I got this card - because it is energy-efficient and did not require an upgrade to my PSU. See my full system specs in my signature below if you want more details. In fact, I am using the Radeon drivers version 10.5 and have not seen any need to upgrade (yet) to the latest version neither and everything is stable. I do have OOM (out of memory) errors but his has nothing :Loser: to do with the card's stability or anything and is an entirely different pain in the rear-end! :Silly: John

Hey John, I got a 5770 from XFX, it's a great card for sure, and it's good enough for FSX too, but I will warn you about a couple of issues; first in 2d panel you can observe (and is common to all ATI cards and drivers) a sort of panel tearing, all the 2d windows seems to be divided in two parts on diagonal and those two parts are a little slided between themselves (sorry for my english, I'll attach a screenshot to explain well)dettaglioa.jpgLook the first simicon on the right, and than at the border of the stby ADI, so you can observe what I'm speaking about. Same Issue continue on that diagonal in the Engine display and in all the 2d gauges on the same line.Nothing happens in 3d cockpit, and I'm using it always, so, I don't care too much about this problem. The second issue is regarding clouds....... My experience (and I read same from almost all ATI owners) is that in strong Clouds or fog situation, maybe also with complex addon aircraft and scenery, fps drops down from 25.-30 to 14-17, and it seems to be caused by the way how ATI drivers apply FSAA to clouds particles. Both this problems are not present on NVIDIA cards, and ATI has already declared not intending to solve Thinking.gifLet me know if you confirm this issues on your system too happy.gifMauro

Hi Mauro, I can confirm the 2D panel splitting and slightly misaligned parts. Thanks for this because I did not know that this was from ATI. The frame-rates with clouds I cannot confirm, perhaps because I have not been in heavy fog or heavy clouds. Do you mean fogs/clouds when taxiing on the ground or at cruise altitude in the air?John

John, I'm intending in both situation, such an example, loading my E-170 (E-jets from Wilco) on my Torino Caselle (LIMF) free add-on airport, a little complex scenery, but this is not the problem, with a clear sky situation, I got something close to my 30 fps limited from FSX option, but if I'll use the same place in a thunderstorm or anyway heavy clouds situation, looking in Virtual cockpit pointing my view in the windshield glass, my fps falls down to 14-17. Note that if I'll move my view looking for example down to the center pedestal, frames go back to max, I think cause no clouds needs to be calculated. Almost the same happens in flight in case of heavy clouds.Someone tells that Bojote Shaders 3 mod should correct the problem, but I tried without luck :Cry:Let me know in case you're able to find a way for solve this problem :smile:Ah, just in case, this seems to happen obviously only with FSAA enabled (mine is set on 4X from ATI tray tools)!Mauro
