February 27, 201016 yr I have a query about reinitiating a failed engine start. I started the port engine as normal without problems. However, the starboard engine had somehow managed to unfeather itself and wouldn't start properly i.e. the gauges did not reach their normal parameters. I decided to abandon the procedure and, as an experiment, wait for the EGT to drop then try again. Had I known how long this would take, I probably wouldn't have bothered but after about 40 minutes (with the port engine still running) the EGT had dropped to the ambient temperature (15C) and I tried again (having checked that the prop was unfeathered) but the master start switch kept resetting itself back to Air a second or two after I pushed the start switch, which then went out.Just wondering if it is not possible to do what I attempted to do. Is the only solution to end and restart the flight? (which would certainly have been a lot quicker) Michael Turner
February 27, 201016 yr See Limitations beginning on page 22 in the AOM.You only had to wait until the EGT was below 200, but note the max time to run the starter is 1 min, and after the third try you need to wait 30 min for the starter to cool down.Otherwise, it is possible to do what you intended to do. Just go easy on the starters. Also, an unfeathered prop is desired, it will not start in feather and that is why you have start locks. Dan Downs KCRP
March 1, 201016 yr Just to add on to what Dan said, you can perform what I believe is termed a "ventilation run" if you need to bring the EGTs down quickly, where you basically run the starter motor without fuel or ignition. The effect of this procedure is to drag air through the engine and speed up the loss of heat to the atmosphere.* Ensure propeller is unfeathered/fully fine* Set the start master to left or right ground as applicable* Select manual start knob to energise position* Depress the appropriate engine start switch* Press engine stop switch within 15 seconds or 15% RPMShould the EGT drop below 200'c before the above limitation you can continue the ventilation run in to a full manual engine start. However, you need to bare in mind what Dan said about max run time for the starter motors, it still applies. The procedure definitely works, I've used it a few times myself.Chris (廖傑英) ckyliu, proud supporter of ViaIntercity.com. i5 12400F, 32GB, RTX4070, more in "About me" on my profile.
