March 1, 201016 yr My apologies if this has been posted before, just want to share http://www.computingunleashed.com/2009/06/...e-guide-to.html before I crash (into bed that is).If you have Win 7 do less should mean more resources for all the fun stuff!RegardsBjorn "I´ll rather be down here wishing I was up there than be up there wishing I was down here"
March 2, 201016 yr Or tweakguides.com. Personally I would rather have the "eye candy" than the suggested performance and speed modifications. I don't think it would speed up the system all that much. If I pay $200 for an OS, I can't see switching all the good stuff off just to play a game. But it's good information to have if you have a computer system which is close to meeting the minimum requirements to run. Thanks for the info!Jim

It's good if you really need it, but on my system I have *never* ever seen any difference after I turned off some services or "tuned" it to use less resources. Only have to be careful not to leave running something that permanently uses disk(s) or the CPU - I even defragged my other disk while flying and noticed zip.But for my W7 Ultimate, I got it for free actually (MS gift), but running without Aero for 1 FPS more - nah.
March 3, 201016 yr MS should have spent more time on W7 performance rather that the useless eye candy.
March 3, 201016 yr MS should have spent more time on W7 performance rather that the useless eye candy.Ouch! Win7 performance is soooo much better than in previous OS's, especially Vista. I've never had a more stable system (so far). And FSX seems to run much smoother than ever before. But, based on your name, 'McCrash', I can understand your frustrations.Best regards,Jim
March 3, 201016 yr MS should have spent more time on W7 performance rather that the useless eye candy.Uhm, no. As Jim said, it is better, I have no idea what's your experience, but my W7x64 is working absolutely flawlessly - better than Vista, better than XP (both 32 and 64). Look both Apple and Windows computers, both are going into "graphical" world. That's completely normal AND needed, otherwise sells would drop - people love graphics and eye candy, and beside much needed performance, candy is also needed, if not anything else, than pure selling-factor.Ability to turn it off is good to have, for people that want to squeeze absolute maximum. And W7 provides that. With ease.

March 4, 201016 yr I agree.W7 is the OS we should have had 5 years ago. I have been running 7RC since May and now just installed the proper 7Ultimate in 20 minutes. Had FSX back and installed by the next evening.Honestly the entire W7 experience is the most painless, pleasurable computing experience I have had since XP came along. FSX has never run better.I also think that now we're in i7 territory and 6 to 8 Gb RAM is becoming normal, that Black Viper tweaks are almost becoming pointless now. In fact, touching the windows 7 config at all is pointless now. March 6, 201016 yr The best way to speed up windows 7 is to disable any unused services by pressing windows key + R and typing in Services.msc from there you can disable any unused services like: for me I always disable print spooler as I have no printer, there are lots of services you can safely disable you just have to read or lookup what each does.Turn off the Aero theme and go back to good old classic modeTurn off Paging File in SystemTurn off Visual effects in SystemTurn off System Restore in SystemDon
March 6, 201016 yr If it ain't broke don't fix it! I'm getting 50 FPS on the ground right now with those services running. You don't have to turn off all those things, you just need to know how to configure them so your games/apps will run smoothly. There is no need to disable aero in the first place becuase FSX does this automatically. Turning off paging is not a good idea, it could really cause problems for many such as out of memory errors and could halt the kernel. System Restore should be up to the user but I usually turn it off because if you get a virus or trojan and you try and do system restore, the malware could be in your system restore files, so it is not completely gone. Not using a background wallpaper is blasphemy. How many FPS will you gain? .0001? FSX and FS9 are full screen apps. When they are in full screen nothing on the desktop is being rendered. For indexing just make the indexing service index the start menu and your documents, you don't need it indexing your whole PC. Miccrosoft has from day one made Windows 7 as fast as they can. ...and to all the people saying Windows XP is faster, of course its going to be faster!! Thats like saying Windows 98 runs faster then XP. They are two different versions of Windows. New features are added to each version of windows and changes are made to graphics, services, the kernel, etc. This means it will run slightly slower, or moderately slower than previous versions of Windows in most cases, but the hardware makes up for it. Windows 7 is as smooth as Windows XP to me anyway. FSX was also made for Windows XP so don't expect miracles on Windows 7. The performance is a lot better than Windows Vista in many cases though. That is what Microsoft was trying to achieve in the first place. They wanted performance better than Windows Vista and they have done exactly that.
