Cartoony Runway Textures

Featured Replies

I finally bit the bullet and got REX + UTX, and things are looking pretty good - except for runways. For some reason, runways now look more cartoonish than ever - I'm not sure if something changed (I think REX replaces some runway textures based on weather conditions), or if the improvements in other textures just made the unrealistic look of runways stand out more.I've also noticed a bit of texture overlap and the occasional evevation quirk around airports (see attached screens). Is this typical? Maybe I have a layer conflict or something? Most of the screenshots I've seen, including the ones here:http://www.exmixer.com/QuickGEXpage/ComparisonNew.shtmllook a bit more normal (in any version) - e.g. the runway paint doesn't have the overblown extreme white outline. Perhaps it's a driver issue? Anyone else have the same issue? Thanks!John

The biggest problem that you're seeing is that your system is unable to render down to the best texture level, as indicated in all three screen captures. Near, far and in between you have no clarity. But you have a whole bunch of jetways at the airport, which indicates the scenery settings are too high, thus not allowing the textures to be rendered down to a normal level during the "rendering loop" within FSX. Back off the settings a notch or two and see if you get some sharpness back.

That's because I quickly slewed over to LGA from another airport to show the glow-in-the-dark-hyperwhite runway texture and took the screen shot before letting the scenery engine catch up. Even once all of the highres textures draw in though - the runway is still ludicrously white and artificial looking. I can see runways from dozens of miles away - they have a rasterized look about them - almost as if I was back in the Bruce Atwick days.Since no one else is having this problem - maybe it is a driver issue - then again - that should impact the runway elevation - so maybe it's a scenery layer problem. Argh.

Could you post some info on your hardware (CPU, graphics card, RAM)?Have you AA working ok with your card and with what settings? If you have a nVIDIA card - Do you use nHancer to improve the quality of the graphics (AA)? What display settings do you have in FSX (the first hardware related tab in display settings)?

I'm at work right now so I can't look this up, but I remember reading that you must install REX first then UTX or the REX textures will override the UTX textures.

UTX does not carry any runway textures as far as I know. Installation order should have no impact on the runway textures.

I have been trying to figure out the problem for over a year.. I also have GEX and REX installed but this does not appear to be a texture problem. I can delete everything in my texture folder and the outline on the runway markings is still there!! All I can think of is that it might be the afcad file for the airport runway showing up somehow...If anyone else has this annomally please respond... Also I have just did a fresh install on another pc and it does not have this problem...Jim HJohn

Why make a big mystery out of this? There are several options in the REX UI which enables you to select different runways and taxiways with regards to colour, texture, surface, etc.First step: Read the manual!

REXI'm sorry, but it is a big mystery becouse this problem is not texture related or a problem with REX. I can delete all runway marking textures from my texture folder and this HIGH CONTRAST WIRE FRAME IMAGE of the runway markings is still there..I'm starting to think I may just have to start from scratch and reinstall everything. But I hate to do that since I have soo many addons it would take me weeks to do so.This is not a hardware or driver issue. I thought maybe there might be a FSX guru here that probably knows exactly what this is and how to get rid of it..Thanks for your patience...Jim H

John et al,Your problem may be as mentioned earlier, your graphics are up too high for what your system can handle. I have done no tweaks as far as all I've come across in this and other forums. Below is a picture of an approach I took 10 minutes ago. My frame rate is set to 24 and as I said, I have a "completely stock" FSX generated fsx.cfg file except I changed a few sliders to suit my liking (increased the autogen to dense and increased traffic to 60/30). Other than that it's what FSX set up for me after deleting the old cfg and letting it generate a new one a week or so ago. I am running myTrafficX, UTX, GEX, REX, and ASE. I use RC4 rather than built-in ATC. That said, I don't think the runways are cartoon-ish at all.

I have to point out here that none of those screenshots exhibit graphics that I would be happy with. You can install GEX, REX, TEX, and even SEX, but you would still have nothing that even comes close to using decent photographic scenery.

Then you haven't seen FTX NA Blue (also known as PNW) yet... :(

Some people like intense coloring which usually is not "real" in an outdoor environment. From the pictures it looks like you have newly paved and painted runways.

Links to screenshots?I have never been a fan of generic scenery textures, and the default ones in FSX are still nowhere near acceptable in my eyes. The urban textures are still awful, and there is no way that I would ever be able to use them. In addition, default autogen has never convinced me either. It looks like someone has just dumped a few boxes haphazardly on the landscape, and written an algorithm that puts trees between them. Totally unconvincing and unrealistic. Some of the water, cloud, and weather effects of these upgrade packages have impressed me, but I personally feel that no amount of tweaking will ever make generic terrain textures look as good as high quality photographs of the real thing (plus a high resolution terrain mesh).

One of many. You'll finally have to get rid of that old (but good for it's time) San Franscico & Seattle stuff.. :(
