Engines Rotation Speed

Featured Replies

Hey guys, i am just wondering. When I saw a couple of videos, especially Md-11, sometimes the engines are rotating slow and it sounds like they are not started. If you can, how do u do that in PMDG MD-11.

The fan you can see out the front (N1) can rotate very easily, you can rotate it using your finger. If the wind is blowing in the right direction the fan will start windmilling, it's not simulated in any FS aircraft I have seen.

The N1 blades aren't directly connected to the engine as such. The N1 spins freely. The turning force comes from the airflow generated by the N2 section. Many turboprops (eg PT6) operate in a similar manner.Paul

Ewww...CFMs... :(It can be noted that it is entirely possible to start an engine with the fan blades tied down. It was a common practice with the old 747s with JT9D engines to troubleshoot oil leaks.
