Scenery cache error in flight - CTD

Featured Replies

After about 90 minutes of flight FS9 crashes with Scenery cache error messages. The first time it happened I had to click on a whole load of dialogues before I could retstart, each for a different scenery in my library, each apparently missing a file or several files. The most recent I got just one error message. The most curious thing is that the error messages concern sceneries whole continents away from where I was flying - example: over Denver and getting an error for Helsinki.Any ideas? Nicholas

Can you tell us exactly what the error message is that you receive?Therein lies the answer.regards,Joe

Oh dear, I was afraid somebody was going to ask that - a bit like the doctor asking me to shoot myself in the leg again so I can tell him exactly what the pain is like.I will have to do a flight and wait for it to crash - not the most apetizing of tasks - so you will have to forgive me if I dont rush off to do it straight away.It says that cached scenery files are missing - and says which files and in which sceneries. Do you need to know which sceneries and which files in order to be able to suggest what the problem is? I cant get over the fact that as far as I can recall, the first time all the sceneries mentioned were in Euroland (including Helsinki) and (I remember this) St Maarten, and the second it was just Helsinki, and on both occasions I was flying KLAX-CYYZ.Perhaps I shall do a different flight to see if its a generalized problem: if that goes ok I will re-do KLAX-CYYZ.Thanks so farNicholas

It's actually more like the police asking for a detailed description of who shot you in the leg instead of "some guy".Are you running a full install of FS9?What are your system specs?regards,Joe

XP Sp3 / Core2Duo E8500 3.16 / Intel DG33BU / GeForce 8800 GTS / 4Gb Corsiar (with switch applied) / 750w PSU / WD 7200rpm 250GbFull install of FS9 Sp1SAEZ-SBRF, LVLD 767 - REX, ASE, RC on network - UT USA and Euro - My World LC and S.AMerica LC - various pay and freeware airports enroute - over 90 minutes flight:"Cache directory error: cached file "aerosoft/mallorca x sc/scenery/lepa_docking" missing. Please close and restart FS. Click ok to continue."Clicking ok brings up more: scenery/world/scenery bvcl scenery/ocen/scenery/at9ocen1 and many others with similar names scenery/generic/scenery/generic and many other similarendless scenery files from Tunis, Greece, Scotland and ad infinitum until I got bored clicking Ok.When I Cnt-Sh-Del out my desktop shows"Windows Application Error - failed to initialize Oxc00000i7" and I am nable to close FS because the Winows Application Error keeps popping up.Only way out is forced exit.

I am not sure what the problem is but here are a few ideas. What changes have you made recently?Do you have a check in the "empty scenery cache" box in the Scenery Library? You might try reversing your current setting and see if that helps. You might try searching, then deleting, all scenery.dat files in your setup. FS will rebuild those the next time you start the sim and if you have a lot of addons this could take a few minutes.

Clicking ok brings up more: scenery/world/scenery bvcl
I am assuming that's bvcf.bgl which has to do with ATC which could be pointing to a problem with RC.I don't have the Mallorca addon and wonder what "lepa_docking" does, and do you indeed have a file with that name in that location?I don't know why, but the first thing that popped into my head when I read your last post was "maybe this is an AES issue"?What happens if you go into the Scenery Library and disable all your addons? Can you make a complete flight then?If so, start adding back in your addons till you isolate the problem child.Wish I had a more definite answer for you, maybe someone else does.regards,Joe

Have to admit to being a little disappointed. After all, when you said ......"Can you tell us exactly what the error message is that you receive? Therein lies the answer!"...... I had imagined that once given the details you asked for you were going to pluck forth the answer and present it to us.I doubt that giving much importance to a particular file is the point: those examples I gave were just that - examples - and there were many others like them - so the issue is wider. Is it an AES issue? Faulty scenery files issue? Is it perhaps not FS but a Windows issue?Turns out that your guess is as good as mine.Nicholas

Belga - not sure where to look in those threads for help, as I have already looked at them The first thread goes unanswered and in the the second the poster says that the problem seemed to have been caused by an addon that I do not have. Are you suggesting that I renew the fs9.cfg or the scenery.cfg - or both?My latest flight gave more cache drectory errors, and closing FS revealed a NET Framework error. So I think my problem is Windoes and not FS.Nicholas

Did you reinstall all of your addons one by one, and then start Flight Simulator, to see if that process may reveal which addon (if any) may be the offending one? Or are you now getting the error(s) on a "bare" FS9 install?

I think & hope Trelane is on the right lines here. Exactly the same happened to me about a year ago. Disabling addon scenery & adding back one at a time tracked down the source of the problem - IIRC some Helsinki (EFHK) scenery but I don't think that matters. All completely fine since I deleted it anyway. It's laborious if you've lots of addon stuff but it did seem to work. Here's hoping,Tim

Tim - Im sorry not to have responded sooner - I completely missed your post cos I have just about given up looking for help. When you said "Exactly the same happened to me about a year ago" - do you mean that you were getting those exact Cache Directory Errors? And were "missing files" quoted in the error message from your own addon scenery and FS files? If that is the case then you are the first person to have come across this error, after my posts over the last two months at least, in four major forums.Nicholas

Can't say they were exactly the same errors because as you say there are (or were) loads of them, one after another, and clicking OK does nothing except bring up more. But they were definitely in the form you described (naming 'missing' cached scenery files) and related to seemingly random bits of default and addon scenery which seemed to have no relevance to the flight in progress. Nor were the files listed 'missing' - it was just that for some reason FS couldn't find them. I'm no techie so this may well not be the same disease but it certainly seems to have the same symptoms. The cure, for me, was as I say just to delete a scenery addon, restart FS, see if that made a difference, if not, add it back and repeat with each addon until discovering the rogue addon that seemed (don't ask me why) to cause the problem.Sounds long & tedious, and it was, but it worked. But on reflection a quicker way would be to delete half of your scenery addons, restart FS and see if things are any different. If all is well, you've then narrowed the rogue file down to one of those in the half you deleted, and if you still get the problem, it's caused by one of the addons in the half you didn't delete. Either way, then delete half of the half (if that makes sense) which you know contains the problem, restart as before, and so on until you've pinpointed the source. Or, of course, the problem could be something else altogether. But it should be worth a go.Good luck,Tim

Hi NicholasThe first thing I always do with a CTD, particularly if it always seems to occur in the same scenery area, is to look for duplicate AFCAD files for an airport in the approximate vicinity. Frequently I would find conflicting AFCADs and deleting or renaming one of them (or moving it to a backup file outside fs9)would usually solve the problem. I use a program called Airport Facilitator X (AFX) to identify conflicting AFCADs but I think there is freeware available which will do this too.BillWindows XP Pro SP2; Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0Ghz CPU; Arctic Cool 7Pro; ASUS P5N-E-SLI Motherboard; 4GB Corsair 800Mhz DDR2 RAM; 768MB nVidia GeForce 8800GTX Dual VGA Graphics card; 2x 500GB SATA 7200RPM Hard Drive; 650W (2 x 12V) PSU; 1000GB Western Digital External Hard Drive; 150GB Western Digital External Hard Drive; CH Pro Yoke and PedalsAll powering 272GB of fs9 escapism!
