One wish I have for my iPhone is that I can disable phonecalls/text messages and leave GPS operational. This would make it a FAR better cockpit tool... as it stands, disabling communication features also disables gps. (Same for other smartphones as I understand.)If the iPod Touch had GPS I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Or, "borrow" one of my kids' ! :)

Fs kneeboard does not utilize gps

Hi Noah - I understand FS Kneeboard may not utilize GPS... but I do :) FS Kneeboard looks great! - but I'm looking for something to use while in the cockpit.A whole bunch of apps would be a lot more desirable to me, as well as to other RW pilots, if iPhone GPS could freely be used with phone/text transmissions turned off. Just sayin'.Obviously, for those pilots with iPads.. well, they must be smiling at their "low-cost" glass panels...

Out of curiosity, why do you need to turn off the phone part? Or are you not flying part 91? I know a few people (myself included) that use FS Kneeboard in the cockpit, even though that wasn't my intention in creating the software, but (assuming you're flying Part 91) there's no reason you cant use one of the other, GPS enabled, apps. There are a few great apps that do this, but the good ones are pretty expensive unfortunately. I just found a new one today called Beacon North America, which is an amazing app, if you dont mind the $150 price tag. ForeFlight is also great but is something like 70 bucks a year to use.

Hi Noah - First, in older aircraft (one I use is a Piper Warrior II), I really don't know if a device like an iPhone would/could interfere with any of the... ah.. "vintage" ;) equipment. There must be some reason they tell you to shut off your electronic stuff in commercial flights - I assume if they could have any effect, it would be more pronounced when mounted on the panel.More directly, though, I do not want to receive phone calls or text messages in the middle of navigating! All I need is to be working my way between airspace when "Dude! What's up??!?!" pops up on my screen...

Thats understandable. You can never be too careful in the air.
