Windows 7 Compatibility Q?

Featured Replies

Good Day Folks,Looking at buying RC again after several years hiatus. I'm now running on a Windows 7-64 bit machine and want to confirm that RC (latest) works under that OS. I tried doing a search for this first, but the Avsim search engine doesn't like a single character in the search field so I have to make a direct post here. I did check the FAQ's and didn't see anything there. Thanks much!Glenn

I can confirm, i am able to run it on Windows 7 64 BitGerald Reilly

Thank you gentlemen. Order is on its way :(

It is best not to install RC in any Program Files folder or subset. RC must be installed with you logged in as an admin and the program set to run as admin (it is easier to do in the shortcut key to it). This has to do with the tight security of Win 7.After you install RC update FSUIPC and Makerwys.exe from the update link above if needed. You will need to be an admin to install those. Here is a link to the FAQ page but some items may be outdated and are corrected in the pinned topics at the head of this forum.

Hey RonThanks very much for this. Unfortunately I installed it in the default location already, so I'm not sure if I should uninstall and reinstall it this soon. That said, everything went very smoothly and I have UAC turned off while running the sim, so on a first test flight I didn't have any issues working it. If you think I should uninstall and reinstall it elsewhere, please let me know.I'll do the updates as you suggest - thank you for that. As for FSUIPC, I have the full registered version anyway and it's the latest so I'm good to go there.Thank you again and I'll be sure to read the FAQ's (I'm a good part of the way through the manual now - excellently written!).Glenn

If you are not having issues then I'd leave the RC installation alone.Be sure that Makerwys.exe is the version from the Schirratti Dowson page, currently MakeRunways 4.41. It fixes some issues of scenery priority of files within a specific folder.I have an article showing that turning off UAC is Win 7 does not turn it off completely as it did in VISTA. I don't have either so can't comment. It came shortly after Win 7 was released written in PC Magazine. But if you are not getting access errors to FS (and FSUIPC within FS modules) then you should be OK.

Hi Ron,I have installed FSX using the default method with UAC turned off and did not run into problems.I have also used the alternate method and again had no problems. It would appear to me to be use whichever you are happy with.Norman

Thank you Ron. I just got 4.41 now and will run it today. Appreciate the head's up on that.So far still no issues accessing or running RC or FS. I did have an issue running FS in XP when I needed to run as an Administrator, so I guess W7 does allow most all, if not all administrator functions with UAC turned off. It would seem I'm good to go.I did a test flight yesterday just loading normally (not R clicking and selecting Run As Administrator) and all went tickety-boo (tickety-boo??? :( ) with no glitches, hitches or controllers getting angry about the fact that I forced a 747 to do a hammerhead in order to miss me while coming down final (thos 747 pilots can be so cranky :( ), so I guess all is good.Back to finish the manual and update the scenery database again. Many thanks for this Ron. Really appreciate you giving me the head's up on this.Glenn
