Help with editing textures using Gimp

Featured Replies

Is there are a good tutorial that walks thru on how to use Gimp (or another freeware program) to edit FSX aircraft textures? I have read some of the documentation and tutorials on the Gimp website, but find them difficult to follow or do not explain very well for what I need.Specifically, I want to learn how to resize and move images on the fuselage and tail sections. I know how to first open the .bmp or .dds files using DXTBmp before sending the file to an image editor like Gimp, but am at a lost after this step ...In Gimp, I have managed to grow a selected image, but cannot fill the extra new space with the existing colour. I am also struggling to realign the colours and resizing the logo in the tail section.

Hi,Keep in mind we are talking about two things at the same time. The skills to use a painting program AND repainting texturefiles for flightsimulator.First you`ll have to learn how to work with the paintingprogram. There are many tutorials about working with paintingprograms on the www.Study them first. Then its time to go to the Repaint FAQ on this forum , you`ll find links to excellent tutorials there. These programs basicly tell you how to make a repaint. They are not all tutorials who start from zero knowledge about working with paintingprograms.SuccesLeen

I recommend using paint.net (free) with the photoshop extension available on the paint.net forums (free). It's much easier to use and more like photoshop if you are at all familiar with it. Gimp was a pain in the behind to try and learn, and I gave up after about a week and looked for and found the above.

I use GIMP for almost all of my serious repaints. There are quite a few online tutorials . . . however, the one thing that helped me most in the beginning was a text book. I purchased it locally but I believe it is available on Amazon around US$32. "Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional" by Akkana Peck, published by "apress". ISBN 1-59059-587-4. There are other books, but this one has color photos which help a lot. There are books available in the Kindle format. Being old school I still like to feel paper.Like anything else it has a learning curve . . . practice, practice . . . and "control Z" !Hope this helps . . . cheers.Joe

OK, I shall give Paint.Net a go. Initially, I couldn't install the latest version because it required Win XP SP3, but I have now found the previous version which has no such requirement.

I think I might be a very good idea to start updating your Windows XP with SP3RegardsLeen de Jager
