Why don't they....

Sorry if this is a rather very silly idea. I got hit on the head pretty hard today by a football. But, I see a lot of people are putting some serious effort in trying to get multiple monitors working, often purchasing up to 6 or 8 monitors. Why don't they develop a headpiece that you can put on (similar to "virtual reality") with trackir capabilities. This, IMO, would be a heck-a-of-alot more realistic than multiple monitors. Seems like the technology is exists but why isn't it available for FSX?I apologize in advance. Again, I got hit pretty hard in the head today. ;-(

I thought NaturalPoint had developed such technology or am I missing something? I see it's temporarily out of stock right now though.http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/Best regards,Jim

There are such things available, but they are better suited to other applications where less keyboard interaction is required (such as a first-person shooter game). FS requires you to hit a lot of keys or buttons on keyboards and other peripheral devices, and you can't do that very easily when you can't see them. You could use the VC and mouse of course, but in practice that is not always as simple as it might seem. What is really needed is some sort of virtual reality glove that can track a virtual hand in the VC (or at least a finger and thumb), so that you could manipulate the switches virtually.Al

I think Hirgab means some glasses with little monitors in them like those VR headsets you see in the movies sometimes (see attached pic). That way, when you move your head your moving your view angle just like track IR does. The difference though is that with track IR you have to turn your eyes to look back at your monitor. With VR glasses all you would need to do to control levers and buttons is turn your head to look at them and then use the mouse as usual.

for Head Mounted Display, well the technology is really out there for something confortable. Right now the field of view and resolution are too low. What's really important is the field of view...

And the price is way too high for computer gaming, unless you're one of those people who can afford to build a simpit anyway. There is a thread in this forum about this very kind of device, it can't be that far from the top.

Does anybody else remember seeing one of these head-mounted displays at the Avsim conference back in 2007? As I recall, they looked pretty promising, and the price wasn't that bad. Somehow, they never took off in the FS world (no pun intended). I've no idea why.

Hirgab- Multi monitors are pretty easy to get working- and the advantage is that different FS views (LFwd,Fwd,RFwd etc) can be displayed AND UNIFIED into a single VERY wide view of the world. Just like the pilot sees in a real aircraft. Compare the views- real 747 vs FS9 in the attached screenshot.I'm one of the unwashed who wouldn't dare touch the innards of a computer nor attempt overclocking- had to have a geek do a housecall to add RAM & update vid drivers for me a few years ago. But setting up multi mons was a snap- even for me! And they are running on a 6 year old 'puter. The result is an FS Field of View about 145

How did you get it going on such an old computer without it bogging down? Are you using WideFS? A 2nd computer besides the one running FS? If I try running a 2nd monitor on a fairly recent computer with FSX, the framerate goes right down.
conundrum-No, not using Wide FS- just a GeForce FX5200 AGP vid card driving two mons and a second same type PCI card for the third mon, along with 2GB RAM. Processor is an AMD XP 2200 @ 1.8 GHz. Monitors are a ten yr old 19" CRT and two different makes of 17"LCDs. With a little colour balancing, there is no apparent difference in the displays. This combination gives a 45" wide perspective and with the outer mons angled back at about 40
