Fatal error when starting FSX

Featured Replies

I am getting Fatal Error whenever I try to start FSX. This happened right after I installed a few livaries from the PMDG website. Any ideas what triggered this? This is what my event log is stating:Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61472.0, time stamp: 0x475e17d3Faulting module name: visualfx.dll, version: 10.0.61472.0, time stamp: 0x475e180eException code: 0xc0000005Fault offset: 0x00020bcbFaulting process id: 0xf68Faulting application start time: 0x01cb161598fd2ba9Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exeFaulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\visualfx.dll

A Google search resulted in no confirmed fixes for this issue. One person fixed it by cleaning up the system registry. Here's what I would try:l. Rename the FSX.cfg to FSX.old and restart and let the config rebuild itself. If that fixes the problem, then something happened in fsx.cfg. 2. Uninstall the PMDG liveries one by one and each time after an uninstall, restart FSX and see if that addon was the problem. I'm guessing you might have a corrupt aircraft.cfg for a PMDG addon and it's looking for visualfx.dll and can't find it as the directory is pointing elsewhere. I hope you had UAC turned off when you installed these new liveries and/or any anti-virus program. Most of the time addon's will be installed correctly but there have been many instances where these programs have created issues.Best regards,Jim

Hello Jim,1. I did exactly what you suggested on point#1. I was able to get into FSX but when I went to free flight and clicked on "change plane" it CTD.2. I uninstalled all my PMDG addons and I am still getting CTD. UAC is turned off. However, I am getting a new error now. See attachment. It took me an entire weekend last time I did a full uninstall and reinstall, I really don't want to go that route.

Ok, it seems when installing PMDG livaries, it deleted the texture folder on the FSX directory. God damn @$^&*%! My windows system restore does not go back far enough (yesterday) for some reason, it only goes back to a few hours ago. Someone, help! :*(

Any ideas or is uninstall/reinstall the only route? I have tens of addons, so it'll be a pain.

Did you try rebuilding the FSX.cfg file yet?

Are you running Windows 7 and did you do the default FSX install to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X?W7 protects files in the Program Files folder and many add-ons have the problem in that they can't write their files to the folder which causes all sorts of problems.Save yourself a LOT of further trouble - uninstall FSX and re install FSX, preferably on it's own drive but at LEAST in it's own folder. If you have just one drive, create a folder named FSX and install FSX and add-ons there. Do not allow the installer to put it in the default location.

You don't need to uninstall/reinstall. Just insert the FSX DVD and select "Repair". After the repair, make sure you reinstall SP1 and SP2 as those have been overwritten by the repair. This way you won't have to reinstall your addon's. I know you said you have UAC turned off, but check again before doing a repair. Best regards,Jim

Ummm not sure if this is the problem, but you are aware that PMDG has some self-help in their installer if for some reason it isn't installed in the method PMDG would prefer? You might want to verify before attempting to install it again after you get your texture folder issue resolved.scott s..
