I decided to give FSX another chance, I bought EZDOK and it completely changed my view on FSX and virtual cockpits. But that's another story. I'm looking for at buying either The Islander from Flight1 or the J41 from PMDG. I'm worried though if m PC will be able to handle either of those planes.I have a core duo2 3.0 gHz, 2 gig Ram and a 9800 Nvidia graphics adapter, so a medium to low pc, though it does a decent job of running FSX. Another big issue is how the planes fly. I like flying by hand alot and put a great deal of weight on how the plane flies. It doesn't have to be exact to the numbers, but must be a pleasure to handfly, a plane where you only reluctantly turn on the autopilot :)As an example, my favorite plane has been LevelDs 767, it's pure pleasure to control.I know the planes are quite different, but thy both fit what I like to fly, small(er) airfields, relative short trips, and oh yes I have a weak spot for British planes, having logged many hours in FS2004 in The VC10, Trident, BAC1-11 and the HS780 :( I hope someone has experience with either plane or both, and would like to share alittle....CheersPeter

While you can suit your J41 to your particular needs, you are going to have to make sacrifices with the aircraft I believe to make it run to your expectations as far as performance goes. It is nonetheless a very well made aircraft which I heartily recommend. As for the Islander, it is a very solid aircraft, and you won't nearly have as many performance issues as with the J41. It is more bare bones. It is a much more straight forward aircraft that I believe will run better on your computer whereas the J41 has a lot of systems which can bog down your CPU, especially if you are worried about performance. As for hand flying, it sounds like the Islander might be your best bet. While you can do so with the J41, it is more of a small tube liner in the way you will fly the plane, FMC and all that jazz. You can't go wrong with either however.

The BN Islander is well known for being an aircraft that pilots like to fly, that I do know, so it would seem to fit your personal preference better (and in terms of CPU load too). You might incidentally, also want to consider Aerosoft's DH Twin Otter, which is probably another one that fits your 'a pleasure to fly and short range' criteria. If you like a lot of gizmos and more of a complex cockpit though, the J41 will be more up your street.Al

Thanks for the quick replies. I believe it'll be the Islander for now, and I'll wait with the J41 untill I upgrade my PC.Cheers Peter

I have a similar PC and my favorite plane is the Duke - it's slower than the J41, but faster than the islander. Fairly FPS efficient, not quite as much as default models. Might want to check it for the future as well:http://realairsimulations.com/duke09/intro...ge=duke09_intro

I picked up the Fly The Maddog MD80 package over this weekend and was blown away. It's beautiful to hand fly and the systems modeling leaves nothing to be desired. /Dave

Your system is like mine I have an E6850 C2D @3.0GHZ 4GB mem (800Mhz) and a 9800GTX card. You can look at some of my videos to see the kind of performance you could expect, even with complex aircraft. I just did a set with the Ariane 737-800. Most have 100% WOAI traffic and real weather conditions, from ASE. Note make sure you are using the /3GB flag on boot if your OS is 32bit. (In the format for your OS) Mine in Windows XP 32 bit Home. You should also add the USERVA=2816 (Since you have a 512MB card) to it. (again in the format for your O/S). This will reduce C2D's due to out of memory errors, even on a 2GB system like yours.

Thanks

Tom
