about altimeter

I was flying in UK, during arrival I was told to descent to 3500 at altimeter 1003, so I pressed B (altimeter reset) but it was 1009. Should I just set it manually to 1003 and leave it there unless told it's different? After landing it was 1003 at the airport, so I figured that controller wanted me to fly at airport altimeter, is that correct?Greg Furmanski

Don't use the "B" key to set the altimeter. I have been given the reason why but don't recall it off hand. Reset using the proper knob. Yes, reset the altimeter only when given a reading by ATC.

the "B" key, which is an FS key - not an RC key, sets the altimeter to the standard pressure when you are above 18,000. obviously, that won't work in any area outside the United States, where the transition altitude is almost never 18,000jd

In my FSX pressing b resets altimeter to current altitude pressure. That's why I asked.Greg

Both is true, it resets altimeter to QNH below US's transition altitude of 18K', but resets to standard 1013 above FL180.Nevertheless, when you are below 18000 and pressing B, it will set altimeter to the QNH around your very own position, not your destination airport which FS obviously does not know anyways. So it could very well be the controller tells you 1003 but when you were in the air still your local QNH could have been 1009 (although the diff seems to be quite large). Anyways, once a controller tells you the QNH I'd set it to that value, because then all aircraft he is controlling will be flying on the same setting. Just my .02$. :(

That's what I wanted to know. If I'm below transition altitude and controller tells me altimeter is 1003 but when i press altimeter reset it sets 1009 what should I do? Set it to what controller wants?Greg

Greg,Dial 1003 into the altimeter. Don't press B to reset the altimeter as it is programmed only to work correctly in the US or elsewhere where the TA is 18000ft.If you have a registered version of FSUIPC assign Kohlsmann Inc and Kohlsmann Dec to two buttons that will allow you to adjust pressure more realistically.

Quoting Ray above: "If you have a registered version of FSUIPC assign Kohlsmann Inc and Kohlsmann Dec to two buttons that will allow you to adjust pressure more realistically. "Now there's a good idea. Thumbs up.

At the moment I have one button on my joystick set to standard pressure and another to reset altimeter (to current pressure). When I pass TL in UK 5000 feet I just press standatd pressure (2992 or 1013) and that works OK. But when I go below UK TL cotroller gives me altimeter setting and I press reset altimeter to current pressure sometimes it's different than what he said. I just assume that he wants me to fly at the airport pressure rather than the one which is around me. Then I have to set it manually. Right?Greg

Never set QNH by using buttons. Use the knob on the altimeter only!vololiberista

Yes, especially set it to the controller (=airport) value. As I already said, the B key will set altimeter to your local QNH, not your destination one. Think of it this way, the B key is a helper you don't have in reality. So stick with what you would do in reality and (deassign the B key... lol) set altimeter to whatever the controller tells you.Good luck! :(Etienne
