What, if any, is my possible UPGRADE?

Featured Replies

I have a great system...you can check my signature on the bottom of my thread. However, I have the "itch" to upgrade my video card. I don't want to do it to have a lateral move...but I want a REAL upgrade to something that will give me better performance. Money is no object here. Please let me know if there is a card that will give me a great improvement. If I have to wait for a future card coming out, so be it. I look forward to your opinions. Here's my present card:Nividia GeForce GTX 285Stan

GTX480 is the best option on the market right now.

In FSX no card will give you a performance boost.

Thanks. I'm starting to find that out in other places. I called Jetline (who built my system) and they will get back to me with what, if anything they can advise me to do in order to enhance the FSX experience. They also said that changing graphic cards won't help much. FSX is processor intensive and is very, very different from other programs (like Crysis). Again....I'm not complaining about my performance. I average high 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's and much higher in most situations other than NYC and airports of that density, but what I want to do is just make it even more fluid if that is possible. Almost all of my sliders are full to the right! I guess I'm searching for the "Holy Grail". I realize you may think I should just be happy with what I have, but I have a few extra bucks I'd like to spend to gain even more improvement on the hobby I love.Stan

Stan I upgraded from a GTX285 (great card) to a 460 mainly to reduce heat and noise.  It meets all my expectations but also runs FSX much better with better quality IMO.  Sure on paper it looks like a wash but the reality is something else.  Another reason is that the core voltage can be unlocked allowing stable OCs over 800 easily.  The 285 was stuck at 670 core. The latest drivers also work much better with the 460 as you would expect. IQ is fabulous with nVidia Inspector (aa=8s combined) and this is where the 460 has it over the 285 performance wise.  It became too much of a chore to get good IQ on the 285 that never was satisfactory. The card is much smaller also.  Indisputably the best graphics card I ever owned (lost count how many).  Only $230.Also, someone at work wanted my 285 for $75.  So it was a no brainer upgrade for me.jja

Yes. You know, sometimes on paper things look so differently than in real life. I do suspect that the 460 or 480 would improve things considerably...regardless of what many say. But I'll wait for Jetline to call me on Monday with their suggestions.Thanks.Stan

Another thing you can look into and increasing your OC. Pay a local computer nerd to help you out with it. Bumping up an extra .5 GHz might not look like a lot, but it can help your performance out tremendously.

HelloWith all due respect I doubt if Stan needs the input of the local computer nerd when it comes to OC
