September 4, 201015 yr Is there a road and rail network for the default MS scenery ? As a former US Army Cavalry Scout(Armored Recon) not beingable to navigate by roads chaps my , ahh.. saddle region. I m new to MS flight sims of any flavor and have FSX Gold. All Ive seen is in whole scenery packs that cost money, many gigabites etc. I m not sure I need all that. ThanksThai
September 4, 201015 yr i don't know about free ones, but the ultimate terrain series has a nice vector roads/rails (and water) over usa, alaska, an europe.. the orbx pnw stuff also has this but just in pacific northwest and australia for now. they're all great. the reason they are many gigabytes is because there's a lot of roads out there haha!only you can decide if you need all that :) i won't fly without them, it makes a huge difference, particularly if you are doing vfr and following roads.. cheers,-andy crosby
September 4, 201015 yr If you really want roads UTX or FTX is the most cost-effective way to achieve this in areas covered, and there are also packages for some other places. If you have access to road data in shapefile format, or possibly from Open Street Map, it is possible to convert the raw data into FSX-compatible scenery using the sdk. Otherwise in worst case you can trace roads that appear in Google Earth and convert the tracings into FSX scenery.scott s..
September 6, 201015 yr UTX is good, but don't expect the roads and rails to be up-to-date. I'm finding a lot of railroad tracks in UTX that havn't existed for many years. Art

Interesting. I didn't know that. I have never developed anything but it is nice to know that my recently acquired GIS skills could come in handy with FS.
