is it possible to move FS9 from one hard drive to another

Hi again,Call me stupid but I`m not sure we understand each other. I haven`t renamed any drives in the process I used.Dave

HelloAs this topic is rolling on, I thought I would ask another question.I have a copy of FS9 on my 'normal' C.drive(the one I always use),I back this up fairly regularly to an external hard drive.(a safety precaution )If I were to click on the FS9 EXE in the external drive copy and it ran, would it be the version on the external drive running or my usual installation on the C.drive?(i guess it would still be my normal C drive copy)I would like to see how (or if)FS9 runs from my external drive. If it did run then I would feel confident that my backup could be installed on a new 'C'drive in the event of a hard disc failure.cheers Andy

Hi,I have an enormous FS9 plus FS98, FS2K, FS2k2 and FSX on an external hard drive and if I click on the FS9 (or other) exe it opens the version that is on the external drive.Further to that I use an exe of `nocdFS9` to do away with loading disc 4.Finally, I have created shortcuts for the exe`s (on the external) and dragged them to my desktop so that I can run them very easily.I have operated like this for 4 or 5 years without problem.DavePS I have a smaller copy of FS9 which I have renamed (the shortcut) to FS9 Experimental.

Hello DaveWere the copies of FS on your external installed to that disc.? if they were then presumably they WOULD run from that disc(as you describe)however the copy of FS9 on my external is a backup from my C drive and (I am guessing all thisRaised%20Eyebrow.gif)would not any short-cuts,or FS9.EXE point to the C drive, and run it from that drive?Good heavens I am confusing myself now.wacko.gifCheers AndyApologies if I am Hijacking, but it is related to the original post I think.

I know the answer will be no.But if you renamed the old full drive "D" and the new one "C" and then moved FS9 onto it,FS9 would still be on "C" drive. VOILÀ What a genius I am. AndyJust%20Kidding.gif
What does this suggestion mean to you?

I am aware that you didn't change the letter of your drive. I gave the reason why you shouldn't change the drive letter.

I can tell what happened to me a couple of years ago. I had a virus that attacked the spyware programme in such a way that it prevented me from running anything. I was able to delete the spyware which gave access to my pc but the virus had deleted the winsock so the only remedy was to reinstall windows. That didn't work so I deleted the windows directory and effectively reinstalled windows as a cold install. This involved having to reinstall many programmes. All this time FS9 was residing on another partition on the same drive.I opened the drive and clicked on fs9.exe and everything worked. To this day my fs9 is not in my windows registry!!!!!! This is because i had been able to make a copy of my documents and settings folder allowing me to copy back into the new folder the old fs9 files including the .cfg.What some people do is to rename the fs9 directory as old fs9. Reinstall a fresh fs9 on the desired disc/partition and then overwrite it with the files from old fs9.vololiberista

The answer is no! Once you install FS9 it is where it is. To move it from one drive to another is almost impossible, you have to be a definite computer geek and know hardware issues inside and out to move it. But a fresh installation of FS9 can be installed on any drive that you see fit to put it on. One thing I have learned from having a total systems crash is that even if you reinstall Windows, you must have an excellent registry cleaner or know how to manually remove any previous installation of FS9 from your computer. Otherwise your add-ons will go to one install and the main installation of FS9 will not have them on it. For the sake of your sanity and those around you, do not attempt to move FS9 or FSX once you have installed them onto a hard drive.

YES IT IS POSSIBLE. I am doing it right now. You must know how to do the inner works of drive management to do it right. If you are not an expert at the computer workings do not try to use the program I am going to name; It is Junction Link Magic by Rekenwonder Software. It creates a junction from your C drive to whatever drive you name as the location of FS. It fools the computer in thinking that the software is still in Drive C when it is in another drive. If you are not a pro you could mess up alot of software and losse FS and it's location if you cannot catch the concept of this technique. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK but it works. My FS is now on my 1TB G Drive and the computer thinks it is still on Drive C.Carl Perry 7+year sim pilot

Thank you everybody,I went ahead and copied the entire FS9 rolder from my C:drive to a new drive and then ran the flight one registary repair tool. After making sure that the move was succesful I went ahead and deleted the file from my C: drive. I don't have the most complex FS9 setup but I do have most of the major additional programs running as well. Everything seems fine. I did have to go and redirect some short cuts. The only pay ware plane that I had to reinstal was the MD-11.Once again, thank you for the advice.
