September 18, 200322 yr Stephen? With compression, must one go away with FSUIPC?Thanks:RTH>Yep. Same here: I compressed the FS9 partition and dumped>FSUIPC. Flying through a layer of cumuli can be so much fun.>>Win XP, P4 1800mh, Geforce sth. 4400 (I think). FS9 at>1600x1200x32, no AA
September 18, 200322 yr Author I'm wondering if compression is, in fact, resulting in improved performance if perhaps the OS is doing some predictive loading of compressed files (anticipating the time required to decompress) and storing more data in RAM VCache, while an uncompressed file is only read by sector(s) as needed so not so much of it is in RAM and hence the process / thread is halted waiting for I/O to complete and be rescheduled. If this hunch is correct, then the performance gain would be in proportion to RAM availability. It could also be that SATA and/or RAID disks might be managed differently.scott s..
September 19, 200322 yr I tested this out on my SCSI U160 system and noticed no improvement with compression, so I uncompressed. I'm guessing there is only improvement for IDE-based, non-RAID systems. I get great performance already--despite the infamous Granite Bay/9700 Pro combo. Have to run with fast writes off to avoid an occasional lockup is the only issue. So, I run with fast-writes off.Noel Noel System: 9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync. September 21, 200322 yr Are you all finding that it's best to compress the entire C drive or just the FS9 program directory?Ken
