New build. Which RAM to get.

Featured Replies

Hi folks. Im starting my new PC build for FSX. Ive got a huge Coolmaster HAF 932 case with heaps o fans, and a 750 Thermaltake PSU. In a couple of days im gonna get a Gigabyte X58a UD7 MB and an i7 950 CPU with some kind of after market cooling. I plan to also get 4 to 8 gig DDR3 RAM. My questions are these. Which RAM should i get between Corsair, Kingston, Gskill or Mushikin? Is there benefit to getting the 2000 mhz sets, or should i be concentrating on the C number? Any suggestions or ideas appreciated.Cheers.

When I was researching parts for my current I7 build earlier this year, most experts said Mushkin is the choice for high end memory, with the lowest timings.

First off, you are best off getting a 6G triple channel DDR3 RAM kit for that build. I recommend the Mushkin redline or ridgeback 1600 cas 6 kits. They both have the same performance though the ridgeback kit has somewhat better heatsinks. Others have reported they overclock really well while still maintaining good timings. I use them in my dual channel P55 mobo and have got them up to 1830 cas 7. As for 2000mhz kits I can't really comment; just don't go for a 2000mhz cas 9 kit (it's not worthwhile IMO, latency does matter!)

Since you are setting up a system with an i7, I suggest getting memory that has triple-channel support, so you'd probably end up with 6 (3x2GB) or 12GB (6x2GB or 3X4GB) of RAM. The faster the speed, and the lower the timings, the better. Probably a set of DDR3 1600 sticks with CAS 7 would suffice just fine.

Thanks for your prompt help everyone. So long as i can make my mind up. I will be getting my stuff tomorow. So i should be looking at a 6 gig kit (3 x 2 gig sticks). It should be tripple channel, as well as DDR3. And low latency is more important than speed ( have noticed alot of debate on this topic). Any futher reccomendations and ideas greatly appreciated.

I have 6GB of Mushkin Redline DDR3 6-8-6-24 1600MHz memory and I really like it. It is much more stable than my old OCZ Gold DDR3 1600 MHz memory.
