FS9 how much worse can It get

Featured Replies

Hi allFinally got a chance to do a long flight today around NZ......... first ILS landing failed as I was not sure why I was experiencing probs...... so away I went again everything going not to bad untill my approach then noticed what a lot of posts have been saying about those dreaded frame rates dropping right down Its so bad that on touch down It was more like a slide show.....One Is getting that frustrated with this sim.. I really think It has been made more for users who want a game ( pretty scenery)... I really thought that owning a P4 2.4g 512 megs of ram 128 meg video card would be more than enoughI see a lot of people saying turn the sliders down or turn them off.... Why should we have to....In fs2002 everything Is turned up to the max and such a smooth sim..anyhow enough said ( just more than enough fed up and dissappointed )

I totally agree. Why would you want to buy the new sim if you can't run it maxed out like it NEEDS to be to enjoy all of its new features, when you can run FS2002 maxed out pretty much FLAWLESSLY?? This relates to a topic posted at www.simviation.com discussing whether or not Flight sim is losing popularity. If M$ isnt careful, there will be a lot of unhappy, and exhausted simmers out there fed up to the point they will refuse to buy the next version.

>I see a lot of people saying turn the sliders down or turn>them off.... Why should we have to....In fs2002 everything Is>turned up to the max and such a smooth sim..anyhow enough said>( just more than enough fed up and dissappointed )I have solved this progressive autogen stuttering problem (at least so far, maybe it will not proof, when I make a real long flight) by moving the autogen-slider from "extremly dense" to "very dense" and I get still lots more autogen than I get in FS2002 with "autogen extremly dense". So your comparison of FS2004 and FS2002 is not valid. Sliders fully to the right in FS2002 is nothing more than FS2004 with liders in the middle!Wolfgang

Thanks for your reply....... I actually do have the sliders set to about half way and the water slider to offThe aircraft I am using Is the 747-200, however even with a smaller ad on aircraft still has the same effectsThere must be something that can be done just to give a fluid banking operation... I have run out of tweaks and Ideas, and still see a lot of others dissappointed with the stutters

Having read your machine spec and mavhine specs in some of the other posts here, I am gobsmacked at some of the comments re frame rates etc.I have a 2200xp AMD cpu with a Geforce 440 mx 64meg nvidia driven graphics card and 256 meg of ram. At the moment I have Just Flights VFR Photographic scenery installed and I have to say have had little or no problems with banking, final approaches or anything else to that matter. The landing stutter that many complain about just doesn't happen. With the VFR scenery you really dont need autogen on, in fact the default is for it to be turned off as most of the buildings dont match up with the photographic scenery. Ergo my fligts in the UK are absolutely stunning. I recently flew from Birmingham to Cardiff just using VFR and was able to follow the major motoways/freeways all the way to Cardiff City, and then just flew along the coast west towards Cardiff Airport, did a nice right downwind leg and circuit and came into land from the south over Porthkerry Park. LovelyThe image below is Culverhouse Cross which is a major junction just near where I live.www.justflight.co.ukI know this doesnt help you with your problem but at least in the UK its a solution. Check out the scenery at the above url.

Nice pic mate! I can see M+S and PCWorld down there!Cheers,Paulhttp://www.strontiumdog.plus.com/sbird.jpgOfficially licenced by British Airways plc for use of name and logo[p]AMD XP2800+ Barton, Gigabyte GA-7NNXP nForce2, 1Gig Crucial PC3200 DDR 400MHz, Gainward 128 MB GF4-4200, SB Audigy, 3 x WD Caviar SE[/p]

You obviously live in Cardiff then.I have some really good ones of the stadium but they are at home, I'm in work atthe moment but dont tell them.

Yes I agree thats the sort of scenery I can achieve, and also when using default aircraft I have no probs with frame ratesIts just when you have the oportunity to use add on aircraft they are so much more detailed and advanced In operation.........you are Inclined never to want to use default aircraft againThese add on aircraft worked great In fs2002 with top frame rates, so you see, I would like to know If this will ever be sorted outYour IFR flight sounds great, I have never really tried that, will give that a go soon, I have always enjoyed IFR / navugationThanks for your reply

Forget about the sliders. They aren't the problem. Search this Forum for JimmyG's solution. Renaming the default.xml autogen file to default.old and changing the one setting in the FS9.cfg file (Terrain_??_Vector=0 vice 1) will do the trick. I have a P4, 2.4 512Mb DDR333 and I nolonger have the slide show. I have my Autogen slider all the way right as well as 100% 3D clouds. Took me about 6 weeks to get to this as I had lots of problems earlier. Look for my earlier posts on frame rates, slide show, etc. Just a few tweeks and you'll be there. Keep the faith.

Thanks for that I will give that a go asap, and let you know

By renaming the xml-autogen file, you miss out the new type of autogen, which I really like so much, like power stations, telegraph lines, street light poles, billboards etc. At least this is how I understand it.But when setting the autogen slider back by just 1 notch, you will hardly realize any difference in how the autogen scenery looks and you will still get a nice mixture of all the different autogen objects available.Wolfgang

Steve This is a post that I put into the general discussion area yeaterday. Do you think the JimmiG solution will fix the highlighted bit of the post.Hi All.I'm posting this quierie again as I dont want it to drop down the list.I wonder if anybody else out there using Just Flight's VFR Photgraphic Scenery has this problem. To get the best out of VFR realistically you should fly at about 2500ft in a Cessna (slowish plane) with visibility set to about 5 or 10 miles. It doesn't really matter what kind of weather you have set as long as you follow the basic rules above. In FS2002 these settings worked perfectly and you could have an extremely realistic flight and even check out your own street.I have found in FS2004 that when you set the weather distance in customised weather setting to about 10 miles, rather than the distance view being shortened you get a mist effect which cuts down visibility radically, this effect is not in the distance but all over even when you look stright down. All colour gets washed out and can look rather greyish. >If one goes back to the normal weather set say for a fair weather day, the distance automatically goes back to 60 miles and you cant reduce that at all.< I hope thats clear, (no pun intended)I remember a tip/tweak somewhere on the fs2002 forum that suggested that you could alter the weather visibility file from 60 miiles down, does anyone know of this tip/tweak for FS9.

>Hi all>>>I really thought that owning a P4 2.4g 512 megs of ram 128 meg>video card would be more than enough>>I see a lot of people saying turn the sliders down or turn>them off.... Why should we have to....In fs2002 everything Is>turned up to the max and such a smooth sim..anyhow enough said>( just more than enough fed up and dissappointed )>> I don't think FS2004 is any different than FS2002. I had to turn plenty of sliders down to get 10fps in FS2002. I have a P3 800mhz 256m of ram and a 32m video card...nothing to sneeze at either!!If you haven't figured it out by now, each issuance of MSFS is meant to be run on your *next* computer. That, unfortunately, is the way technology advances. If they designed it to reach its limits using merely a P4 2.4gig rig, then what is left for the guy who spent a heck of a lot more money than you on their game rig? Nothing. Then all you are going to see on the forums are a lot of fed up and disappointed owners of P5 4gig rig owners in a few months wondering why there's no improvement even after they've plunked 4g's for a new gameboy. So the problem here is not any kind of performance issue with the game...it's your rig. You need to set the sliders so that it runs smooth on YOUR rig. It's no different than any other game. You set the sliders on Falcon 4.0, IL-2, NASCAR, and Ghost Recon also, don't you? No game here has ever been designed to be fully handled by the current generation of economical computers. Set the game to match your hardware. The true problem here is the quick turnaround of each version of MSFS. Two years is too short. Your frustration is symptomatic of this. Just as soon as the hardware catches up with one iteration of the series, the next one is released. As you already said, you're enjoying FS2002 with everything maxed out. That's because FS2002 was designed for your P4 2.4rig, which was the *next* computer back then. So there really is two options for MS for addressing your frustration, either dumb down the features so that "max" sliders can actually be handled by the current generation, or shift to a longer cycle time so that people can digest the current version. Either way, the limit is being set by your hardware. Now, I'm not saying that there are no bugs in the game. It's still too early to tell whether or not there are *true* patchable issues with the software, but before you gripe, set your software up so that it can realistically run on your rig, then come back here and gripe.

I would have to disagree to an extent with this. And agree too. I agree that it is designed for the next gen computers. However this is a totally different problem that this gentleman is having. A known issue. If it is the difference between 10 more FPS and a chicken place, I know what I will choose. There is no reason at all for the slowdown the extra autogen causes. And it doesn't slow down at first, but gradually over time. I was doing touch and goes contiunsly for 2 hours at KSEA the other day. Never hit any menu button during this time. In the begining I could maintain 20+FPS. But by the end of the 2 hours, I was lucky to get above 10. Then I renamed the file, did the same thing, and I was still at 20+ at the end of my pratice session.(BTW I am pretty good at hitting a 3 point with the cub :)). Many have posted with simuliar problems. This is a known issue. Not a performance issue of his machine. I think that a P4 2.4 should be able to run with most sliders maxed. I know alot of people that are. Its when you start adding the AA and AF with the current systems create a terrible slowdown. And that will be handled with the next gen vid cards and processors.
