October 10, 200322 yr Commercial Member I've seen posts from a number of folks over the last couple of days saying that their menu flickering problem has been solved by installing the Catalyst 3.8 drivers, but nobody who claims it's fixed has posted their system specs. If we can all work together on this problem, maybe we can at least understand it, and hopefully fix it for some more people. The important thing is to list your system specs fully so we can see a common thread if there is one. The things I'd like to know from anyone who says their problem resolved are: * CPU (Manufacturer & type) * Motherboard * RAM (maker, type & amount) * ATI card model * Version of Windows * Version of DirectX * type of monitor you are running (LCD, CRT) * number of monitors you're running on your ATI card * Anything else you feel is relevantIf you could also detail how you installed the drivers (installing over the old ones, removing the old first, etc.) and whether you have reinstalled FS2004 and/or DirectX lately that might help as well. Also, if anyone sees a spec I missed, please add it here. Let's use the power of this community to good effect!thanks, Bill Womack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit my FS Blog or follow me on Twitter (username: bwomack). October 10, 200322 yr Commercial Member I'm curious to hear from any AMD users as well. Is there anyone out there using an Athlon that has solved their flickering problems? October 10, 200322 yr >What desktop resolution are you running and are you running>in FScreen mode?My questions exactly Big. I'm curious how you guys are probably the only 2 who don't suffer from flashing menus that aren't running a Radeon card. Now if your running in anything other than 1600x1200 or in windowed mode...PLEASE tell US how you apparently solved the menu flashing problem. VERY VERY CURIOUS.Bobby
October 10, 200322 yr Commercial Member BTW, Bobby -- I tried 1600x1200 and it made no difference in the flashing. Just throwing in my experience.thx, Bill Womack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit my FS Blog or follow me on Twitter (username: bwomack). October 10, 200322 yr Hi Bill,I'm using an Athlon, but I haven't solved the problem. But the question is, is everyone talking about the same thing here? I assume you mean the problem, where in full-screen mode, the screen goes blank a couple of times when you press the 'Alt' button, before returning to normal. In the past I have seen a lot of confusion that was caused by people using the same term to describe different things... :).Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
October 10, 200322 yr Here's what I have:* CPU (Manufacturer & type): Intel P4 @3.06* Motherboard: gigaByte 8INXP Dual Channel Mode (HT Enabled* RAM (maker, type & amount): Kingston, PC266DDR, 1024K* ATI card model: 9700 Pro 128* Version of Windows: WinXP Pro SP2* Version of DirectX: 9.0b* type of monitor you are running (LCD, CRT):NEC Multisyc LCD 1700V* number of monitors you're running on your ATI card: 1Sound=TurtleBeach SantaCruzController=Saitek X-45 ( current driver only not the SGE software)I had text blurring/smearing and some texture blurring through the 3.7 drivers, both the CATS and the Omegas. The CAT 3.8's appear to have completely resolved the problem. I tried the Omega 3.8's also and found that they also resolved the issues, but seem to be unstable on my system and have reverted to the CAT 3.8's.I pretty much install after removing the previous driver and control panel.
October 10, 200322 yr Commercial Member That's exactly what I mean. I've been worried too that some of the people who have "solved" this problem aren't talking about the same thing as the rest of us. The problem is that when switching from 2D to full-screen 3D mode there is a lot of flashing of the elements on screen during which (at least on my system) there is also an error "ding" played at least once. It's as if DirectX were attempting to go into 3D mode but had to keep trying until it worked. Obviously it's not that simple, but that's the way it looks. Just to clarify for anyone else who is thinking of posting to this thread -- this problem does not happen in windowed mode, only in full-screen 3D. If you can switch to full-screen 3D smoothly without the above mentioned flashing (and you have an ATI video card) please post! I'm very curious as to why. thanks, Bill Womack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit my FS Blog or follow me on Twitter (username: bwomack). October 10, 200322 yr Commercial Member Yes Ed, I don't get any more smearing of text either using the 3.8s. It seems they successfully addressed that problem. Do you still get the screen flashing when switching to fullscreen 3d mode, though? October 10, 200322 yr I don't know if I have "flickering" or not. I mean the autogen buildings and stuff flickers once in awhile but that's usually when it is trying to draw a telephone pole form 5,000 feet. Kinda tough to do.I have been getting 30fps from the very start. I have everything maxxed. I don't think I have blurry menus because I don't know what blurry menus are. The sim runs smoothly and fluidly. No complaints whatsoever. (Except for the way it handles overcast and putting in clouds on a cloudless day.)* CPU: I don't have a clue. It's a Gateway 700X computer. I have a Intel Pentium 4 2800MHz - (I found that on the invoice if that's what you mean)* Motherboard: I don't know* RAM: 1024MB RAM - I don't know what type or who made it.* ATI: Radeon Pro 128 (I did look up the version today - 6.14.1.6307)* Version of Windows: Home SP1* Version of DirectX: 9.0a* type of monitor you are running: CRT* number of monitors you're running on your ATI card: 1* I don't know what resolution I'm "running" either. I think I am running in the "Windowed" mode, but again; I'm not sure. Gee, I never knew using Flight Simulator required so much technical knowledge of the machine you were using.Regards,DonaldS
October 10, 200322 yr Commercial Member Hi Donald,See my above post. The flickering refers to the screen going black repeatedly while loading into fullscreen 3D mode. It sort of flashes from an image to black a number of times before settling down to display the proper images. I repeat, this will NOT happen to anyone, as far as I know, in windowed mode. If you hit alt-enter to switch to full-screen mode you'll see what I mean.thanks, Bill Womack ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit my FS Blog or follow me on Twitter (username: bwomack).
