November 11, 201015 yr How do you get the flatten poly in AFX 1.09 to actually flatten the terrain in FSX? I'm trying to create a new "fantasy" airstrip, currently only have a runway with a flatten and apron poly surrounding it; however, it is absolutely refusing to flatten the terrain... If I set the airport elevation to the actual elevation I scouted for the area, most of the runway ends up underground, if I raise the elevation so that the whole runway is not underground, it's floating in mid-air... If AFX now has the ability to save CVX vector type flattens etc. in a separate BGL file from that of the main airport code (haven't had time to test this "new" updated feature on my copy yet), I'd do so initially at least, to minimize confusion and maximize control of your flattening process, especially if you plan to release the scenery to others in the FS Community.Setting all RWY and ARP elevations the same as the airport's underlying "central" flatten(s) clears up most plateau/trough issues, but sometimes an additional surrounding 'skirt' of sloped flattens is also needed to blend the airport properly into terrain outside the "central" airport background flatten area. You might find some pertinent info on making "Sloped Flattens" in ADE and/or SBuilderX here:http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17964&highlight=sloped+flattenHope this helps ! :( GaryGB
November 12, 201015 yr Author Well, unfortunately I deleted that attempt, so no screenshot possible...I'm now trying it in the latest version of ADE... In ADE, the flatten poly does seem to work, but the apron poly and the runway don't show up at all.. Although the generic building I threw in there to see if ANYTHING was working does show up...And for whatever reason, despite deleting the .bgl file from the Addon Scenery folder from AFX, that airport still shows up in the GPS, so now I have 2 airstrips of the same identifier a short distance apart from each other... You could try FSX Airport Scanner to see if that brings it up.In ADE runways and aprons are locked to the airport reference height. So you need to make sure that your flatten poly is no higher than that. In fact try making it a tiny bit lower and see if your airport features do show up. Next time I get a chance to play with it, maybe I'll try increasing that margin... Declared weather: FSX: ASN / FS9: ASE

I don't think (but I could be wrong) that AFX in FSX uses terrain polys to flatten - it may use something else. Jon ------- Microsoft Flight Sim MVP Airport Design Editor FSDeveloper.com

Apparently the "flatten polygon" is a misnomer. The might as well call it the invisible floor because it doesn't flatten anything, if you can get it to work at all. So I guess that leaves us to find only perfectly flat areas for our airports. I cannot believe that they charge $30 for AFX. You should not have to pay more than $5 for it, if that. What a disaster. My reason for posting is that I have also found that deleting the add-on .bgl file doesn't get rid of the airport designation. But I found a solution. I again went into AFX to find out what was going on, so I searched for the airport that I created (my self created airport designator was CRHS) and sure enough it was there. I said, well what the hell, load the file, and it asked me if I was sure, I said yes, and then I clicked "save as" to find out where the #^@% that file was. Sure enough, it was another .bgl file that was in a sub folder under the main scenery folder, so right there, I selected it, right clicked on it and deleted it. That solved my problem. Hopefully that solves your multiple airport issue as well. As for AFX, it is great for editing current airports, but is just a cryin' shame when it comes to creating your own airport. If anyone has an EASY way of making flat plateaus or flat depressions in the FSX earth, let me know. I don't have time to learn ADE or Microsofts editor yet. I'll probably have an aneurysm when I try though, as nothing ever seems easy when dealing with Microsoft.
