Just found this for you Etienne, its really interesting!http://en.wikipedia....display_systems
Hey Sam,thanks so much for the link. I just saw the caption term "distant focus image" and it immediately caught my attention, since I had always wondered how on earth these engineers did it to let the image appear to be so far away, in fact appear like "real life size", kinda hard to explain, one has to see it. Then I was never sure if my eyes weren't just playing tricks on me, that's why I mentioned the fresnel lenses above because I wondered if it could be involved eventually.Since I always get redirected to my local Wikipedia site I actually forget to check the English version on a regular basis, my bad. Thanks again, I'll read the article asap tomorrow, but now I've gotta get a nap real quick haha. Big%20Grin.gifsig.gif

No problem, enjoy your rest! Don't get too involved with it all, it still puzzles me to think we actually see everything upside down in life... :(

Incredibly interesting footage.Love that motion envelope. That's almost 45° tilt into each direction, while I wonder when those would be fully used, maybe during RTOs or so.Couple questions that arise:
  1. Why is smoke blowing thru the hall twice during the video (most noticable at 4:12)? I do know some sims will simulate smoke but...!?
  2. What are these two huge diameter yellow hoses connected to the sim?
  3. The probably most interesting question though, quoted from Youtube: "would be interesting to know how that mirrored screen works".

Yes, exactly. I've never seen the screen from inside. As far as I see there is a smaller canvas around the flight deck windows. Alright, then there is this huge curved concave mirrored screen around. When I was on the roof of some other sim I noted multiple big projectors, so I take they actually project onto the mirror, which in turn reflects the light onto that canvas? It this how it works? I've read about fresnel lenses as well regarding FFSs, even on Avsim forums. Anyone able to shed light on FFS visual systems? I'd greatly appreciate it.sig.gif

I can answer this with some authority...
  1. This I don't know.... even if it was simulated smoke, that seems to be a lot.
  2. Those are for air conditioning. Some sims only have one, but as you pack more electronics in you need to keep them cool.
  3. The mirror that the pilot's look at is a very thin mylar material. Similar to the inside of a chip bag. It's pulled across the dome and held perfectly flat by a vacuum pump. The images are not actually projected onto the mirror though, what you see is a reflection of a screen above your head. Because the mylar mirror is collimated you get an illusion of depth, which makes it easier to judge distances.

Let me know if you have any other sim questions.Cam J
