December 4, 201015 yr Hey guys,I have an Asus P5E X38 chipset board and a EVGA GTX 8800 768mb card, along with a Core 2 E6850. Ancient stuff, I know, but fast enough for my FS9 setup. For no apparent reason, the system won't POST now. On power-up, the fans spin, I hear power from all the drives... but no beeps at all and my monitor stays in standby mode. The P5E manual says that a certain sequence of beeps will be heard if VGA is not detected. However, I'm not hearing anything when the card is seated or removed. I only hear beeps when I remove the memory. I haven't tried removing the CPU.Do you suspect the board or the card? It's all powered by PC Power&Cooling 750w.Is there anyway to test the card while the system is on to see if it's getting power. I have a pretty basic voltage tester but have never used it. And my 2nd pc is even more ancient than this one so I can't swap the parts. Thanks for any suggestions.Rob Rob Simmons
December 4, 201015 yr Moderator What I would do is to reset the bios - usually a jumper on the mobo - follow the instructions in the manual. Then, remove or disconnect everything, memory, video, drives and power up.You should get beeps - if you do then the board and CPU are probably ok - then start adding the memory and repeat and so on. See if you can determine what is the issue. Can you get another old video card to test?IIRC the 8800 has two connectors - try another one.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
December 4, 201015 yr Author Thanks for the reply, Vic. I did some searching on the Asus forums. The general consensus points towards a dead mobo. I never would have guessed because I thought 'dead' meant absolutely no power would go thru it. Luckily, it is a 3-year old board and I can pick one up for cheap on ebay probably.I've previously done everything you suggested, with the exception of removing the cpu. (only because the cooling setup is complicated lol) I only get beeps when the memory isn't installed. Oh well, I'll consider the matter closed here, and go further in on the asus forums. I plan to build a system for fsx, but am patiently waiting for the new intel chips to come out next year. Thanks again for your reply!Rob Rob Simmons
December 4, 201015 yr Check suggestions here. Beep codes (once you get them) here. If you're MB is dead, wait for Sandy Bridge (Intel's nextgen microarchitecture) on Jan 9th!Cheers,- jahman.
December 4, 201015 yr This has happened to me before. Your board isn't getting enough power for some reason, probably because of overclocking -- it seems our old x38 chipsets get confused sometims. I've been able to solve the issue by resetting the bios, completely unplugging the power supply, remove the RAM, replug in the power, then reboot, then shut off again. I then replace ONE of my RAM sticks turn the power on and it should POST.It's not a dead board -- and your hardware looksjust fine to me for FS9. HTH Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. December 4, 201015 yr Author Thanks again for the help guys. I went DEEP into the Asus forums and found the prob. Turns out one of my crucial ballistix was the cause. One stick will let me post in any of the 4 slots. But the other stick won't post in any of them. I wish those useless, colorful, flashing lights would go out as a sign that the stick was no longer working lol. Now I'm running on 2gb mem.Would you believe this problem happened back in May? I gave up on FS life right when it happened and I've been saving money for a new build ever since. I can't believe I haven't flown since May. I'm so excited that I will be back in the air sometime this evening. And Jahman, yes, come Jan 9th I will be building a sandy bridge! Thanks again guys!Rob Rob Simmons
December 4, 201015 yr Glad to hear you're rolling! Let us know how it goes with Sandy Bridge when you get there.Cheers,- jahman.
December 5, 201015 yr Author Well, I didn't go flying yesterday. Spent all night organizing the inside of my case and did some OC work. My CPU is stable at 3.6 but I'm thinking my sole remaining crucial mem stick is also on its way out. And silly me, I had a 2 x 1GB setup. I could have sworn it was a 2 x 2GB. They were DDR2-800 but the P5E manual says it can handle up to DDR2-1066. Any recommendations on a 2x2gb set? And don't say Crucial because in all my years of pc building, this is the first time I've had memory fail on me.Thanks!! Rob Simmons

December 5, 201015 yr I bought that Crucial "High Performance" memory when I did my first build and wasn't very happy with it's performance either. I have OCZ Dominator in my Flight Sim box that OCs nicely to 1089 and has been stable all along. It's coming up on 2 years old. Please let me know how you make out; where you end up finding some good DDR2 these days. Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B. December 5, 201015 yr Author Chuck, I usually make all my purchases at newegg and found a 2x2 set of corsairs for $95. Didn't see any OCZ but will look closer. I'm not making the purchase til Wed so I may keep an eye out for something else. Thanks for the Mushkin referral, Vic.Rob Rob Simmons
December 5, 201015 yr Author I found these at newegg for $80. The previous Corsairs I mentioned for $95 are in newegg's 'high performance gaming' category. But these have been reviewed over 1600 times and seems pretty solid. I don't wanna go overboard with costs as I'm planning to build a new rig in the near future. Any thoughts?Chuck, where did you get your Dominators? Couldn't find any on DDR2's on newegg. Maybe ebay when I get a moment to look. Thanks,Rob(working on a sig) lol Rob Simmons

I just did a scan over at ebay and I couldn't find them in the first couple of pages of listings. Like I said, hard to find nowadays . . . EDIT: Rob: When I bought mine I wanted to be sure I bought PC8500 -- those you're looking at are PC6400. The difference in price was about 40 bucks (I think) but I didn't want to cheap out on something as vital as RAM. Just my two cents -- there are many here much more knowledgable than I who may chime in. Smooth Skies! -- Chuck B.
