Recieved NGX Set, My First Impressions Compared to MD-11X Set

Featured Replies

Alright. After a long day of running around, and spending a small amount of time tracking my package down (Fed Ex loaded it onto the wrong truck) it came in the mail. I took some photographs of the books together, and will do a general overview. Me going farther than that depends on permission from Robert or Ryan as I do not want to step on what they have going on here. After a quick read through though on the books. There is A LOT of information to be gained about the product, and the direction they have gone with it. Looking at the NGX set compared to my MD-11X set it makes them look puny. I will start it off the way the last person did with a shot of the outside of the box, and a shot of what was inside before I meddled around removing it all. I will say the box is packed very well, and everything arrived in tact, and undamaged even though the box was somewhat beat up on the ends.100_0497.jpg100_0498.jpgUpon taking everything out of the box you recognize the shear amount of material that has been presented to you for one aircraft. I had to move from doing the photos in the living room onto the bed, and get a step stool to get high enough to get it all in one shot. 100_0499.jpgComparing the books to each other, and particularly the QRH which is especially important to me while flying the MD-11X. You realize how much more NGX potentially has to offer. A hugely important (and one of the most complained about things when the MD-11 first came out) is that the NGX books offer you the limitations, and performace charts for different conditions. Even for contaminated (wet) runways. The difference in the 2 QRH's alone show you the sheer amount of stuff that you need at your finger tips in order to operate this bird.100_0500.jpgA quick shot of the inside of the MD-11X QRH versus the color NGX QRH. I chose a non-descript page as not to give away anything I am not supposed to. Although the NGX QRH does give you the in flight performance limitations for several NG models (one can only assume these will be the only ones modeled). Going off that chart looks like 5 different models, and 3 different engine choices. Very happy with what I see though.100_0501.jpgYou also get the other books which are just as well finished as the ones shown. The lights/switches book is in color, and gives you a panel by panel breakdown the switches & their operation.. The included Jeppesen flight charts are like ones that I have seen at my work. It looks like a litte book, but the approach plates fold out into their full selves. It looks like the tutorials are going to take us into some of the busiest airspace in the US. So it should be fun and intuitive especially if there are some failures thrown in there. As far as the posters go I cannot compare them to the MD-11 ones as I never got those. Overall though they are very well done, and printed on thick paper. It makes studying how the systems are linked together easier for people who do not have a lot of aircraft experience, or for those of us (like me) who have no large jet experience. I thought the systems posters were coming in the tube that has been shown in the pictures, but much to my suprise there were 3 cockpit posters contained inside this cannister. They look to be about 1/3 scale, and done on paper that reminds me of what I used to do isometric drawings in my engineering days. 100_0503.jpgSo overall I give it a 100% rating. Price is obviously massive, but it reflects the quality of what arrived in the box. My only critique is the same with the MD-11 and that is the laminated checklist. It is not for beginners, or those new to complex add-on aircraft. It is very generic, and for only the most experienced (probably real life) 737NG pilots. My original recommendation still stands that you use the Normal Checklist in the FCOM Volume 1 for initial flights, as even the Normal Checklist in the QRH is only 2 pages front and back. I will put more thoughts up as I read through all of this information.

Thanks for sharing, and a nice comparison between the MD11 and NGX. I'm so tempted to get the captains set, just don't have the funds right now :(

That is really cool! Thanks for posting pictures :biggrin:I've resigned to probably not going to be able to get the set anytime in the near future. So I'll live vicariously through your pictures. :(

Hello,I can recommed this set to every serious pilot, it's definately worth every $ you spend on it! :( :( I was already impressed by the MD11 set, but this set just beats it......Peter AertssenAmsterdam EHAM

Yeah. From flipping through the books it looks like this bird is going to stomp the MD-11 into the ground. I will still fly her though as that is my favorite tube-liner of all time. I am just glad I will be able to make my BBJ, and C-40A out of the NGX package. :( Reading through the QRH though there are some things that get the old gears turning in my mind. Especially the checklist for "Engine Severe Damage or Seperation." In said checklist it talks about unusual airframe vibes (which if you watch videos on you tube of turbo-fan blade off tests you can see how violent the vibes get at certain RPMs). There are also checklists for engine surges/stalls. Certaintly can't wait to see how these checklists, and corrective actions stack up against what really happens in the bird. Have flown the MD-11 from day one though they do not put useless information in the checklists from what I have seen. Except for the Oxygen checks which is something they have never simulated on previous aircraft anyway.

This should not be critique, seriously. :( As far as can be told from all the pics of the checklist that have been posted so far it seems to be the one straight out of the manual, which is mostly used on the real deal as well minus a few adjustments depending on the airline. This is a checklist (challenge - response), so it is not going to teach you how to operate the plane. What you refer to in the FCOM is most likely not a checklist but rather a detailed explanation how to set up your cockpit. And yes, it's obsiously not for beginners since it requires you to know how to operate the plane during the different stages of flight (otherwise there's not much to check :(). But it's just as it should be, and the only one used on the flight deck, talking about normal procedures. If you need info on how to set up the plane there's the full manual for full explanations, but when flying you should be able to perform your items by heart. Big%20Grin.gifsig.gif

--- double post --- sorry :(

Well I just like letting people know. So that way they aren't staring at the laminated checklist or QRH (like I did when I initially purchased the MD-11X) torching engines, and so on. I guess you are right in that I shouldn't have listed it as a critique, but rather an FYI to people new in the community. I guess the QRH is like my crutch since I use a very similar book on the H-60 when I do ground turns. I'd rather have that in my hand than laminated paper so when it hits the fan can go through the memory items, and then the abnormal procedures. I mean a true airline Captain or Chief Pilot would be able to use these as they would have thousands of hours in type (I assume) as they can recall all this information at the drop of a hat. My training though is counter-intuitive to that as the military tells us to do nothing without referencing a checklist/pub other than memory items (fire, engine failure type stuff). Not to mention I only have a hair over 100 hours in 7 years ground turning our birds for maintenance checks. Which I suppose is why it feels weird to me to use it. I really need to go to NAS Jax and see if they use something like that on the C-40A's. All I saw online in the NATEC inventory though was a NATOPS (basically FCOM), and a NATOPS Pocket Checklist (QRH) which is the same stuff that we use for my aircraft. I suppose I can use those publications as well on the NGX. Certaintly would be fun to try and see the results. I
