Question about ATC's way to name you

Featured Replies

For some reaosn, my call sign in the Maddog is "Douglas <Reg. Nr.>" while all other airliners are always <Airline> <Flight Nr.>. I have looked in the aircraft.cfg and all info seems to be there. Both flight number and airline are mentioned, but still ATC calls me by the manufacturer's name, as if I am GA. I really don't get it... How does ATC determine what to call me? Plus, when the airline is entered incorrectly in the cfg, it does call me by my flight number (doesn't name the airline because it doesn't recognize it). Most important: How do I get ATC to call my Leonardo Maddog by airline and flight number?

Hi Benjamin. You need to find the following in the aircraft.cfg file:atc_id=G-EASY atc_airline=Easy atc_flight_number=424 atc_type=AIRBUS atc_model=A320The "atc_airline=" is what determines how the ATC refer to you. Its possible that the maddog will be showing McDonnell Douglas, or it maybe even blank, so try changing it to the airline you require. A list of the airlines that FS2004 accepts can be found here. Make sure you copy the text from within the "ATC Callsign" coloumn. You may also need to check the menu options within FS2004. I believe it is called "change callsign" or similar from within the aircraft selection menu. You should be able to select the callsign to be called from there.Hope this helps!

There's also a setting in FSUIPC that determines this, but I can't remember exactly what it's called -- I'm at work. I can see the drop down in my head but that's it. If you're aircraft.cfg is correct for each paint scheme and it still does it, look in FSUIPC.

Well, as I said, I had looked in the aircraft.cfg to see if there were any problems there - everything was set as it should have been set. However, your suggestion, Sam, to look at the aircraft selection screen within FS to select callsign and the like, showed me what's wrong. There was no flight number set!BUT - this is weird. I DID enter a flight number into the aircraft.cfg. So, my guess is that the Maddog manager and setup app deleted it. Sure enough - all variants that I flew with didn't have the flight number entered in the aircraft.cfg. So, either the setup app deletes it for nor good reason, or I forgot to enter it into the setup app during pre-flight. I'm gonna experiment a bit and see what happens. At least I've seen now where the problem stems from. thanks!

There are two places to control these settings:
  • in the aircraft.cfg
  • in the Select Aircraft area

The latter always takes priority over the former. If your aircraft.cfg is correct, then it is probably being over-ridden. Make sure the latter has a correct callsign and flight number assigned. Hopefully that will fix it for you.John

With default ATC there is limited valid callsigns that ATC will recognize, mostly the fictitious ones that came with FSX(Orbit, World Travel etc.) If you want ATC to use realistic callsigns, you need to update the airlines call list file (airlines.cfg) with the airlines you want to use. In addition to have it repeated verbally voice files need to be made. The easiest way to do this is to use a program called EditVoicePack (freeware). With it, when you update it, and check the update airline call list option it will do this for you with most of the known airlines used. In addition you will have the ability to improve the phraseology of ATC with either a FAA voice set for when tou fly in the U.S. or ICAO for the rest of the world. You can also add additional modifications yourself or import what others have offered. I did a set myself to add wind callout for landing, and expected flight levels for Clearance Delivery instructions. They are available in the library in the FSX/Sounds section. Search for "EditVoicePack Modifications". Other options are payware Radar Contact 4.3 (RC4), Proflight2000 Emulator (PFE) or VOXATC. You can get EditVoicePack here http://www.editvoicepack.com/Note: My mods are only for the FSX version, just realized this was the FS2004 forum. If though you also use FSX, they could be used with that. I actually have a FS2004 version of these mods, but are a little confused on how to distribute it that way, as the developer has their own method of distribution of mods for FS2004. (Although I'm not sure if he still does it that way.)

Thanks

I appreciate the help, but as I said in my former, I know where the problem is: it's the Leonardo Maddog's manager and setup utility that screws it up. This thanks to Sam, who commentyed on the aircraft selection screen, where I saw that no flight number was assigned to the aircraft.During preflight, you can setup fuel, payload, and the layout of your cockpit in this app. This includes stuff as which model (vc or not) and what panel type (widescreen, normal and some other choices). Basically, this means that the setup manager has control of the aircraft.cfg, since it can write to it what model and panel you want to use during your flight. When you're finished with the preflight, you can select to start FS directly after closing the setup app, and it will continue to load FS and then immediately the situation file you chose in during preflight in the setup app. So, somewhere in that app, there should be a way to set the flight number also. So basically, I can change it as often as I wish in the aircraft.cfg as I want, but if I use the setup app, it's bound to be overriden again. Ergo, I have three options:- Do not use the setup app to start FS. I'd rather use it since it makes life easier.- Manually rechoose the aircraft after the flight has loaded. This too, is just more hassle than really necessary.- Find a way to set the flight number in the setup manager before starting FS and the flight. I'm quite sure I saw this option once, but I can't remember if it made a difference in the sim.So I'm gonna go with option 3 for now. If that doesn't work, I'll go for option 2.

Right, found it. In the Maddog's setup app, there is indeed a window to fill out the flight number. Once I had filled that out before starting the flight, I was indeed called "Scandinavian 478", as it should be. Can't believe it took me so long to find this out...
