Over-clocking Core i7 930 experiences

Featured Replies

How far have other's gotten over-clocking a 930?I must be doing something wrong with mine, I can't even hit 4.0 with stability / good temps.Specs:i7 930 with a Corsair H50 for cooling (arctic silver 5 used w/ vertical line method).Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R main board2xGTX 470 in SLI1,000 watt Corsair XMS power supplyI can get up to about 3.8 but temps are high around 70C during a prime-95 run according to the on-board sensors.Any advice is appreciated or general insights, maybe I just have a 930 core that won't go that high.

Thanks! Matt S.

Have you tried lowering vcore until oc or boot fails? Then add a notch or two of voltage for stable oc. 70 degr. is not a problem at all during test. Bjorn

Hi. The 70C sounds too much for me. Im running my 930 at 3780mhz (cant remember the temps for testing) and my temps varies between 59-62 during FSX with my zalman cooler. Ive just bought a noctua d14 cooler because i want to go higher on clockspeed and the zalman is too loud, probably i will instal it on tuesday. I will let you know where i could get.

Take a look at this overclocking guide for the I7-920/930.http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/538439-guide-overclocking-core-i7-920-930-a.html

Thanks for the info guys!I'll take a look and see where I can get.

Thanks! Matt S.

HiSo just installed my new cooler and rams...i can tell you the max with my 930 is 3.8ghz. after many hours of tweaking in bios and testing with linx i could not go any higher then 3800mhz. for me thats the end. but if you tweak well your fsx.cfg thats fair enough i guess.

I've got a Noctua DH-14 cooler and I've got 4.1 Ghz on 1.27 Vcore.Let me know if you need help.William Stroud

Hii would be very happy if You could help me. I've raised my vcore to the skies with 4ghz and i wasnt stable, blue srceens after 2 mins with linx everytime so i went back to 3.8Right now im skiing in Austria i will be back on wednesday evening. if it is not a problem i would contact you.thanksLaszlo

I'll be around. I'm doing alot of applying for grad school. Some chips just can't be pushed too hard. Check some of the overclock guides on overclock.com . You SHOULD be able to get more than 3.8 out of it. My test temps are around 75C with this setup. Can you post your other voltages?

Here are the BIOS settings I had for my P6T Deluxe v2 i7 950 at 4.2GHz. You will need to change the ram timings from my 6-7-6-18 to your 6-8-6-24. You may need to adust voltages to get stable, mostly CPU Voltage and QPI/Dram voltage. If you do not have it download RealTemp and as long as your core temps stay at 80C or under when stress testing that is fine, FSX will never run that hot. Laszlo,I am not trying to hijack your thread, I just did not want to start a new one when I have the same questions as you. I am sure we can both benefit from the answers. However my board is an ASUS Sabertooth X58 w/i7 950 cpu. After reading the reply from idahosurge I noticed he had HT disabled. I disabled HT and my temps went from 75c down to 63c running Prime. This leaves a fair amount of wiggle room with my volts. I have read that HT does nothing for FS, is this correct? Idahosurge, did you find your system more stable w/ low CPU ratio and higher bus on your P6T?Willy

HT does not do anything for FSX because FSX is not coded to make use of HT. With HT off your core temps will be lower. The way that I learned was a lower BCLK with a higher CPU ratio is better because a lower BCLK means a lower bus clock and that equates to less CPU core heat. With that said everything is a trade off. You have a certain clock that you want to get to, you have ram that you want to run at their rated speed, you have your QPI link freq that you have to watch and your uncore (UCLK) generally has to be twice your ram freq. So what you try to do is to keep your BCLK as low as possible while obtaining the clock you want with your CPU ratio and your ram/uncore freqs you want using those multipliers along with the QPI link freq that is acceptable. The BIOS settings that I posted for the p6T Deluxe v2 should be pretty close to the BIOS settings that you see in you Sabertooth X58. Here are the settings that I have for my R3E, these may include some of the BIOS settings you have with your Sabertooth and you can see how I set mine. You can see that for 4.2GHz with my 950 I had a BCLK of 200 and a CPU Ratio of 21. Since the 980X has higher CPU ratios I get to 4.44GHz with a BCLK of only 164, but my CPU Ratio is 27.Here is a link to a great freq calculator that you can play around with, messing with this for 10 minutes can explain the way all the settings work together better than I ever could in writing.http://icrontic.com/files/apps/nehalem-calc/Overclock Settings 4.44GHzLN2 Mode: DisabledQPI Loadline Calibration: DisabledSync Mode: DisabledAI Overclock Tuner: ManualOC From CPU Level Up: Auto2D Performance Booster: DisabledCPU Ratio Setting: 27CPU Turbo Power Limit: DisabledBLCK Frequency: 164PCIE Frequency: 100DRAM Frequency: DDR3 1644MHzUCLK Frequency: 3287MHzQPI Link Data Rate: 5919MT/sMemory Configuration Protect: DisabledDRAM Timing Control1st Information :CAS# Latency: 6DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 7DRAM RAS# PRE Time: 6DRAM RAS# ACT Time: 182nd Information :DRAM Timing Mode: 1NCPU Differential Amplitude: AutoCPU Clock Skew: AutoIOH Clock Skew: AutoDigi+ Pwr Mode: T-BalancedPWM Volt.
