Got myself a new cooler and mobo

Featured Replies

Hey all a few days ago some bad things happend actually i got myself a new cooler for my cpu in hope to overclock it so ican get a fast and nice fsx.As happy i was while i tried to install the cooler my mobo got damaged in the process (my mistake) so i got myself a new mobo yesterday the MSI P55-GD65 and installed the cooler right this time(learned it the hard way eh?) Anyway yesterday with some help from Ryan(we both have the same mobo now) i started overcloccking my cpu and wow is all i can tellMy cpu is now overclocked to 4.0 ghz(i7 860) and i had a big major boost in fps into fsx running now stable 15 fps at aerosoft schiphol( seems low but before the overclock i was getting 6 or something)So i'm quite happy that i know this machine can handle the NGX when it comes :)That's all

Nice one!Just out of interest, what cooling do you have? How hot is your CPU running while FSX is at a busy airport?http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/I have the same chip as you, would be interesting to know what your temps are.

I'm glad on your behalf, but believe me - wait until you get 30-35fps @ EHAM with the PMDG MD11, it will really make you smile like myself :(

Nice temps. I use a Noctua DH-14 and I've got my 930 running at 3.9 GhZ. I have a question for you tecchies. Is HT off a good idea for FSX? I don't really do anything on my PC except play games (I have a Mac for 'work'). I have a Vcore of 1.368 and it came overclocked from where I purchased it. With HT off could I increase my clocks? I suppose HT does increase temps.William Stroud

HT doesnt do anything for FSX. But you might find other programs / external addons (UT2 for example) may rely on it. HT does increase temps, but not hugely in my experience. IMHO, i would leave it on.

I am running UT2 and ASE as well as REX. They all do benefit from HT? Strange. My temps don't seem to be much lower with it off.

I found the same. Slightly lower temps, but nothing to write home about. Sometimes, i play iTunes while in flight. With HT off, music jumped every now and then. I also noticed more cloud popping also. My machine is 3.5Ghz with 8Gb DDR3, but YMMV obviously.FSX is all about experimentation im afraid.

I see a huge difference in temps when overclocked at full load using Prime 95 with HT on vs. off - this is well known in the OCing community. I very seriously doubt HT on does anything for UT2 and ASE etc - those programs use very little CPU to begin with.

Ryan. You're right. HT off resulted in a minute change at rest, but a 15C drop using the Blend test. Thanks.William Stroud

Recently i've purchased a Noctua NH-D14, for my AMD X6 1055T, and it's perfect!!!Tomorrow i'll OC my CPU

Running an i7 950 @ 4GHz with a Noctua NH-D14 on an EVGA X58SLI3, I notice quite a difference in CPU core temperatures when running Prime95 with HT on or off. At least 10°C, if not more... turning off HT for FSX had no noticeable effect for me, other than the CPU core temperatures reduce, particularly in places like FTX YBBN, FSDT KJFK, MegaAirport EDDM, and so on.Andrew

Nice. I've got your ame setup except an i7 930, gtx 480, and three SSDs. I love that Noctua. You might be able to get a higher overclock. I'm running 4.1 GhZ on 1.29 Vcore.William Stroud
