February 14, 201115 yr Hey folks,I'm new to the MD11 (FS9) and have just completed my first full flight after spending some time reading the manuals/tutorial, had a great sense of satisfaction at the end of my flight, although the landing left some of my teeth on the cockpit floor :( will need further circuit training for sure.I was using Radar Contact for the trip and was told to pass 40 DME prior to a VOR at FL150, I missed it and got a thick ear from the controller :( can someone explain how to enterthis restriction into my FMS.thanks and regards,Steve
February 14, 201115 yr Steve: If you are flying on an airway or radial inbound to the VOR, you can put a custom waypoint at the desired distance using the place-bearing-distance method. Look for PDB waypoint in your documentation. Dan Downs KCRP
February 14, 201115 yr Author Hey Dan,cheers for the pointer Dan, will get into the manual / sim this evening.regards,Steve.
February 14, 201115 yr Commercial Member I really want to meet whoever programmed this radar contact program. It seems as if this instruction is common, based on the comments here on the forum, and it is not (at least in the United States). As discussed in another thread, it's a valid command, but it's not common. Most of the time, ATC will tell you a specific fix (e.g.: "Cross FALKO at 10,000 and 250 knots..."), but you'll rarely hear some DME from some VOR (random or on your route), or even the destination airport for that matter. While I'm glad it's getting people used to ATC that's better than the default, I think it's giving people unrealistic expectations. February 14, 201115 yr Author Hi folks,Did another trip OPKC (Karachi) to VOBG (Bangalore) and got the same Radar Contact atc instruction this time 250kts @ FL110 40 DME prior MMV, I looked up the PDB in the manual but got totally confused :( so I got into VS and managed to meet the demand by watching the DME readout on the ND, I wasnt spot on but it was enough for Radar Contact not to give me a slap. Looking at it again if I input ie MMV/109/40 then 250/11000 would this be correct, sorry to seem a dimwit but its all alot take in and get right, although no doubt it will 'click' at some stage, on the plus side my landing was much much better..!thanks and regards,Steve.
February 15, 201115 yr Commercial Member Just for clarification in case anyone happens by the post with questions, it's PBD - Point/Place, Bearing, Distance. Kyle Rodgers
February 15, 201115 yr Author Hi folks,Thankyou for correcting my error Kyle, can you say if I input as above it will work..?thanks and regards,Steve.
February 15, 201115 yr Commercial Member No problem, I just didn't want people getting frustrated searching the net and the PDFs for the wrong terms. The PBD format will work in the MD-11, though its proper syntax I'm drawing a blank on at the moment. I've seen one before that's AML270/20, and another that uses AML/270/20, and I can't recall which the MD uses. Both use P->B->D, it's just the slashes that are throwing me. Have a look at the FMC guide and it'll have just about everything you'll ever need. If not, I can always pull it up when I get home from work. Kyle Rodgers
February 15, 201115 yr Author Hi Kyle,Ok will try both formats on the next trip, no doubt the restriction will come up again, and will read the FMS manual again, thanks for your time, appreciate it.regards,Steve.
February 15, 201115 yr Commercial Member Steve,Just checked the FMS manual and it's in the AML/270/20 format for the MD. It must be Boeing that uses the other syntax. Kyle Rodgers
February 15, 201115 yr Author Thats excellent, many thanks for your help Kyle, looking at the manual I was in a 'cant see the woods for the trees' situation :( all the best,Steve.
February 15, 201115 yr Thats excellent, many thanks for your help Kyle, looking at the manual I was in a 'cant see the woods for the trees' situation :( all the best,Steve.Hi Steve,if you have AOA's training there's a beautifulexplanation of PBD on the "MD11_LOC_HD" video. It's for PHNL RNWY LOC 8L using the "Alana" trans. He does it manually to show us how it's done. it starts at about 6:01. Alex Cadle
February 15, 201115 yr Author Hi Alex,Thanks for that, have justed looked into AoA certainly looks like the way ahead for me to get the most from the MD11.all the best,Steve.
