February 25, 201115 yr I don't know why when using FSX (direct weather control) the active runway is 180 degrees wrong. A flight to KORD tonight with winds at (shift z) 050 at 15 gusts to 20 (4R). Traffic is all landing with the wind. When I select 'standard mode' I get stutters so I'm about ready to shelve ASE. Thanks.Bob.. Bob Prince

February 25, 201115 yr Author In my limited experience, turning off DWC seems to help immensely.I can't use the 'Standard' mode because the frame rates bounce between 5 and 25 creating un-flyable stuttering. I don't understand how FSX decides the active runway and how ASE influences that choice. This morning sitting on 27R at KPHL with winds 210@15 FSX ATIS has the active of 9L. AI landing with 10 to 15 knot tailwinds. Makes no sense. Bob.. :) Bob Prince
February 25, 201115 yr Hi Bob,After letting ASE and FSX load and settle, are you using the Refresh AI Icon in ASE?
February 25, 201115 yr Jim, we have discussed this issue so much I am just tired and just going to live with it. Yesterday I flew from KDFW to KMIA. Just so it is not a subject of this discussion I have ASE latest build and the same with FSUIPC. The NWS had a forecast of winds at KMIA for landing time of 120/09. I planned my approach on the SSCOT1 arrival. When Radar Contact asked for the weather at KMIA I received 295/72, of course using DWC. I ignor this and landed on runway 12. As I approached 10 miles from KMIA ASE changed the winds to 110/07. I landed and just had to smile how WRONG everything was.Of course if I had not used DWC the winds would have been perfect, but the Standard mode in ASE causes all kinds of stutters and is just crap on my system. Don't expect an answer but this destintion weather issue is still with us.Bob Johnson
February 25, 201115 yr Author Hi Bob,After letting ASE and FSX load and settle, are you using the Refresh AI Icon in ASE?Hi Jim and thank you for your reply. I have tried that and FSX seems to ignore the wind direction. I honestly don't know if ASE is causing the problem but it is frustrating after a 8 hour flight to land with AI coming straight at you. Thanks.Bob.. :) Bob Prince
February 25, 201115 yr BobP,What is the version number of your FSUIPC4, if installed?I am also going to assume that ASE is B642, correct?
February 26, 201115 yr Author BobP,What is the version number of your FSUIPC4, if installed?I am also going to assume that ASE is B642, correct?Jim, B642 and FSUIPC 6.0.0 plus tried the current beta from Pete. Thanks.Bob.. :) Bob Prince
February 26, 201115 yr Moderator In my limited experience, turning off DWC seems to help immensely. So far for me, using the Smooth Could setting seems like a good compromise between Standard mode and DWC mode and usually get FSX winds to match up with what ASE is reporting. I couldn't use Standard mode either due to the FPS jumps even when letting it settle for a few minutes. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
February 26, 201115 yr So far for me, using the Smooth Could setting seems like a good compromise between Standard mode and DWC mode and usually get FSX winds to match up with what ASE is reporting. I couldn't use Standard mode either due to the FPS jumps even when letting it settle for a few minutes.I just did a test flight with ASE running in Smooth Cloud mode instead of DWC mode. I got almost perfect winds and good destination winds when Radar Contact asked for the destination weather. No stutters, so I too am about to give up on DWC mode. I need to read up on what are the limitations of the Smooth mode.Bob
March 1, 201115 yr I have used Smooth Clouds mode (or the default method pre SP2) and found it to have the best depiction of weather. But the caveat with this approach is that enroute winds aloft is problematic, resulting in the either losing the aloft winds in cruise altogether at times, or the winds shifting constantly, both of which play havoc with the LNAV tracking in PMDG birds, and resulting in the a/c losing altitude or speed and trying to overcompensate to get back to a stable state. With all the visual problems that come with DWC (global weather resulting in contrails on the ground and strange AI behavior using the wrong runways) the stable winds aloft of DWC trump the visual artifacts. After many long hauls with smooth mode (which almost always had situations where the autopilot became unstable because of the shifting winds), I am now a die hard DWC user because of the stability of cruise winds, which is very important for tubeliner cruise. I love watching AI spotting, but I have to remind myself I'm simulating airliner ops first and foremost, and DWC really does offer the best weather scenario for this type of flight simulation. I appreciate Hifi explaining the pros and cons of the three methods of weather generation (Standard, Smooth Clouds, and DWC), it really is up to the user to decide which scenario is best for them. On a related note, I read on another thread a detailed account of how broke the FSX weather engine is (according to FSUIPC creator Pete Dowson, the weather engine programmer left when FSX was first released) and it's a shame that the engine was not corrected/improved upon in SP1 or SP2. Weather behavior/accuracy is so important to a plausible flight simulation experience, and it is sad that we have to accept such a tradeoff between visual weather depiction accuracy vs. flight performance stability in FSX.Pete's post on this subject is at : http://forum.avsim.net/topic/328164-i-just-uninstalled-fsuipc-and/page__p__1936027#entry1936027 A.J. March 1, 201115 yr I have'nt upgraded to ASE yet as, I am curious as to what are the improvements of ASE over ASA are? A new interface? From what I'v been reading, Most of the problems that exist with ASE existed with ASA as well! Except now we have a new kicker. Use standard mode, get stutters, and bad frames. Great! Use smooth cloud mode, and get fudged up winds aloft. Great! Use DWC well you know the drill. So which mode should I use? What are the improvements, really? I could live with standard mode except for the stutters, and frames, so I atleast hope that gets fixed. Until then ASA will do. March 2, 201115 yr I think Jim from Hifi or others may be able to explain the improvements of ASE over ASA better than me, but I can say that the "standard" mode (with the stutters) is a new mode introduced in ASE SP2 beta that uses simconnect to inject weather, and because of the way that process works stutters are a natural byproduct. So you would want to avoid that mode at all costs if the stutters are a nuisance to you (and I'd imagine that is the case for ALL users) I guess the advantage of using Standard mode and accepting the intermittent stutters is the best visual depiction of weather and clouds, but I don't know for sure as I refuse to use that mode. Think of "smooth cloud transitions" as the "default" ASA/ASE mode with no stutters, so if you decide not to use DWC, Smooth is the way to go.Regarding "fudged winds aloft" , in my experience winds aloft using smooth clouds (or default mode prior to SP2 in ASE) doesn't mean winds aloft are FUBAR, it just meant that the winds would intemittently change direction unrealistically some of the time, but not all the time. This was especially painful to experience during long haul flights with an extended amount of time at cruise levels, but I suppose such winds aloft stability is not so crucial if you are doing short hops or GA flying. In that case, in exchange for accepting less than optimal winds aloft accuracy, you gain better visuals (i.e. more accurate cloud formations, correct FSX ATIS reports which results in AI using the correct runways and the weather depiction respecting the actual reported conditions at each individual weather station, as opposed to global DWC forcing your current weather at altitude to be the defacto weather conditions everywhere.)IMHO, ASE improves upon ASA, and has the same modes as before, just remember that the standard mode is a new 3rd option of processing weather. March 3, 201115 yr After months of frustration with ASE in DWC mode, I switch to Smooth Cloud mode. Like so many others the Standard mode was just unusable too many stutters and low frames. On my first short test flight with ASE in Smooth Cloud mode I was impressed with the results and I got correct destination weather using Radar Contact.Yesterday I did my first long flight KMIA to EGLL with the LDS 767. I got very smooth winds and perfect destination weather report in Radar Contact. I must admit however that I also have FSUIPC registered with weather options set to disable aloft turbulence and gust and have wind and visibility smoothing activated. This combination gave me just a perfect weather environment along the entire route, and I have force destination weather enabled and that worked also. I am VERY pleased with this setup and will not go back to DWC.I hope that Jim can add some more technical advice, but I am a very happy camper.Bob Johnson
