March 28, 201115 yr I took the MD out of the virtual hangar this weekend and flew a flight which resulted in a missed approach and a hold. I wanted to retry the approach, but I kept getting a "no destination" dialogue. Is there a short cut to trick the the CDU into knowing what my destination is when I've flown to the end of the route including the missed approach? I eventually got it to work, but it didn't seem very intuitive. Doug Orvis PP-ASEL-IA (USA), Based at KHEF Picture courtesy of Kyle Rodgers

I'm asking about the FMS/CDU not having a destination after I went missed and how to tell it to reshoot the approach without it screwing up the hold programmed in. March 29, 201115 yr Commercial Member Without having looked back at the manuals, I'm not 100% on this, but why not program the route from your holding fix to the destination in the SEC FP, and activate it inbound to the fix? Like I said, though, I haven't looked at the manuals and haven't bothered with non-standard ops in the MD-11 lately, so my guidance may be off. Kyle Rodgers
March 29, 201115 yr I am not sure about the actual operation of this FMS and what "screwing up hold" really means but typically, regardless of aircraft type you would have to load a new approach, pick IAF for this approach and leave the holding pattern to fly to this IAF (assuming it is self-navigation and not a controller assisted approach). At least in G1000 avionics it is a fairly straigtforward procedure and I can imagine it should be equally straightforward in MD-11. Michael J.
March 30, 201115 yr Author See, that's the issue. I couldn't load a new approach because it kept telling me I had no destination. Eventually I addedthe airport as a waypoint and then entered the approach again, but it strikes me that there should still be a destination if you're in the air. I'll see if I can replicate this when I fly again. Doug Orvis PP-ASEL-IA (USA), Based at KHEF Picture courtesy of Kyle Rodgers

I spent a huge amount of time learning the systems but never spent to much time trying to find out if the loss of data was pilot error. Anyway my solution was to activate the Sec flightplan whilst in the hold and direct to the CF of the arrival runway. Rob Prest
March 30, 201115 yr Author Thanks, Rob. That's the clarification I was looking for. Very strange, as you, that it would dump your info at a crtical phase of the flight. I thought about doing the secondary flight plan, maybe I'll reload the flight from that point and try that. Doug Orvis PP-ASEL-IA (USA), Based at KHEF Picture courtesy of Kyle Rodgers
April 3, 201115 yr What I do is re enter the dep and arr and select an arrival, that's it! Bryan Richards "People depend so much on automation that they forget how to get the automation to work." B.W.
