April 5, 201115 yr Hi thereI am currently looking at a new computer, because i am upgrading from my laptop. This new computer (a desktop) will be around 70% for Fsx and 30% some other games and personal stuff. Will my computer run Fsx ( i am highly confident it will :D), and what setting should i expect to run Fsx at while achieving smooth frames? (around 25-30+)(Keep in mind this computer will be NEW)Here are the specs....:Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz Dual Core Processor Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 Motherboard - USB3 & SATA3 ReadyRam: 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333 CL9 Dual Channel MemoryGraphics Card: Single AMD Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 - DX11 / Eyefinity ReadyPower Supply: Antec EarthWatts 650W 80 Plus Certified Power SupplyAudio: High-Definition 7.1 Performance Audio Supporting S/DIF Optical Out Harddrive: 500GB - SATA3 6Gb/s 7200rpm 16MB Cache HDDOS: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit (The above specs were copied off the website i am purchasing my comp on so some of the stuff may not be needed to be shown)So what are your thoughts? Thanks a lotK. LambHelloIt will run FSX but not at the FPS that you are hoping for.
April 5, 201115 yr The computer will be NEW but it's definitely not new technology. FSX will run as mentioned above. You can expect to have to turn autogen and scenery to the left (way to the left) when near any urban areas and performance will still not be great. With that particular GPU, though, You can use higher resolution clouds and a high resolution screen. No AI traffic (A/C, Cars, Boats). Is a mild overclock an option? If so, I can see that processor performing close to or a little slower than my old C2D E8400. I had it overclocked to 4.1GHz and it performed decently when in rural areas. The drawback (well, there were many drawbacks) was TrackIr 5 hated that processor. Blurries will be an issue but with very low settings you should be able to run add on aircraft at playable fps.I would at least suggest a four core AMD processor since you're 70% FSX. That's enough to justify ~40 extra bucks. I'd suggest even more saving your money and buying something that isn't already very dated. Good luck ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 5, 201115 yr Hi there, thanks for your replies.I can upgrade it to a quad-core 3.2ghz for only 80$ more btw the quad core is..: AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz 2MB Cache Quad-Core ProcessorBut im not wanting to spend too much more on it.So what exactly is outdated and what could i do to improve it?And are there any parts that should be fine in this pc?thanks a lot
April 5, 201115 yr Settings: low to medium, depending which aircraft you are planing to fly.Your planed computer is rather weak, and the CPU you are wanting to invest is not optimal for FSX.In short:Either invest into an Intel system (2500K), take good cooler and overclock what you can get out of it or run low-setting FSX.2nd, you GPU is WAY to weak for FSX.GF 560 TI should be AT LEAST what you should get, from what I gather from other people. GTX570 would be better.I guess it's the financial reason, thus I would advise you either go with REALLY low expectations, since FSX is going to be a real drag on the upper system or just use FS9.And one another thing: FSX out of the box, without addons is going to run rather well. All those slowdowns are due to todays addons, and I mean everything: UTX, REX2, airports, aircraft...And no, I wouldn't use anything out of the that setup for FSX. And that includes RAM too...
April 6, 201115 yr Yup. I was trying to stay away from AMD bashing, but the Intels (even if you went 1st gen i5) are faster and better suited to FSX's demands. If I only played the newest brainless FPS games like Crysis 2 I'd have an AMD processor with a stronger GPU. This is not the case... ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 6, 201115 yr That's quite weird because I have a friend that has a laptop with I think 2ghz. And 4th ram, and he runs fsx smoothly at about medium settings. If he can run it smoothly with that system then surely i could run it at those settings. By the way I am not planning on upgrading more because I am a teenager and don't have a budget that an adult would. I am also not going to get any addons. So how come my friend can run it smoothly but I won't be able to? ThanksThat's quite weird because I have a friend that has a laptop with I think 2ghz. So how come my friend can run it smoothly but I won't be able to? ThanksWell this is were opinions come in. My opinion is a slide show at KJFK is unacceptable. I like high settings and high FPS. I also like to fly realistic payware aircraft, not the down right crappy default ones.Have your friend take off and fly around New York or Seattle with all medium settings. ALL MEDIUM. Have him display the FPS while he flies and notice the terrible performance when he flies around the city in the default G1000 C172 from the virtual cockpit... That being said if you're not using add ons and such, I can't see buying a system specifically for FSX...As a 16 year old I was able to save up for what was then a powerful Flight Simulator computer (old Pentium D system). You stand to learn to do the same! Offer to mow lawns, wash cars, move furniture. You'll have an easier time making money than a poor college student... Trust me. How do you think I built my current system? *Saving* ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
April 6, 201115 yr Ok so it's not just for fsx. Some people don't need a lot to get entertainment. You don't need a payware prosit IMO. Anyway, I fly around nz and the carribean. Usingthe default aircraft, and probably autogen slider to the left, how do you think my pc will do? ThanksOh and btw I have been babysitting local friends and doing a paper run for about a yer so that's IMO good saving up, not spending another year to upgrade my system to run fsx very well:/

April 6, 201115 yr Come on, an athlon II is not that bad of a CPU. And a 5770 is a very decent GPU that will not bottleneck the systemIf you can stretch for a Phenom II x4 955, you should get an extra boost, but don't think for a minute it will double performance just because it has twice the cores
April 6, 201115 yr Thanks. That what I thought as my friend who knows a lot about computers said the you is quite good, and a chart shows it can run crusts at about 50 fps at medium settings
April 6, 201115 yr So what settings could I run it at with 20-40fps?Low-medium. It depends on where you are. Urban areas-Low Over the Caribbean-Medium. That you're in those default aircraft you'll be alright. You'll have to figure out individual settings on your own. Make sure to update FSX to SP2 then: Use bojote's tweaker. http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
