what is BETA TESTING all about?

Featured Replies

Hi all,Last week, PMDG posted that the new 737NGX is close to be released. Now PMDG says yesterday:"Thirdly, we are prepping to start beta testing... Was supposed to happen on Friday but we had a coupe things we wanted to resolve first. Possibly Monday. We'll see...Please note that we aren't going to tell you about it until AFTER it happens... might be a few days, might be a few weeks.."What is the story about beta testing in this context? Does it still need to be beta tested? Is there an alpha test as well then?I try to understand: the first tests are accomplished and now they start the "second tests" (beta test)? If I understand well, beta testing may take "a few days, might be a few weeks.."? If so, a few weeks is soon enough a month, maybe two...Then we will have june... That's not close!

If you have been waiting since 2008, then June sounds very close! And yes, beta testing is still to commence (as far as the public knows).

Yeah! But if you consider that it was planned in 2010, then june 2011 is late!

"Planned" being the key word here. There never was a fixed release date. You can look up the definition of beta testing on Wikipedia. Basically, all planned features are implemented and working. Now it's down to bug fixing.

Alpha testing = new features are being implemented, Beta testing = All the features have been implemented, bug squashing stage. Its common for beta tests to take at least a few weeks. A few days in unheard of

Yes, unfortunately for companies like Wilco they forgot what Beta testing is, so I'm glad PMDG is doing it right.I want a bug free airplane! If not, I want a can of Raid with my purchase order.

Ok, thanks. This helps me to understand. In this case, I easily can plan a short-term vacation before release! Vamos a la playa!!(cf PMDG post of 31 march, which says at the end: "Now don't go planning any short-term vacations... You wouldn't want to miss release day!")

I think sometime it's better to have more people working on a project if possible. Because if it takes 3 years by the time it's released there may be another sim on the market. I think 1 year is enough for any aircraft addon; again if more people are working on it. I hope their 777 could be released for Microsoft Flight :(.

Beta testing is only the second phase of testing. There's Charlie testing, then Delta, Echo, Foxtrot all the way down to Zebra testing. Then it's finally ready for release. That is how good PMDG are!

Zebra Testing is essentially the point PMDG takes the bird out of their screens and ships it to an Airliner... Because there is a demand for $60+ 737 :)

In December I started a topic asking the same question. You may find the answer for your question there:Alpha and Beta Testing - What's the difference? But here is a reply I recieved in that thread that may help you:
It depends on the policies of the company, but in general alpha testing is functional testing done by in-house developers to verify that the code is behaving as intended whereas beta testing is done by outsiders or a sample of customers to see how well the code holds up to use by non-developers. This is where the unexpected is supposed to be discovered and fixed. Ideally, everything works exactly as intended before the beta testers get their hands on it and try to do things the developers never expected as well as put the product through its paces on many different machines.

Imagine that commercial where the guy pulls a new car out of the trunk of his totaled car. Now picture some airline exec pulling a 737 out of his monitor. (New PMDG commercial rolleyes.gif)
