Win7 64 bit and FSX

Featured Replies

I have had and used FSX and win 7 64 bit for some years now, and have purchased quite a few scenery add-ons and aircraft at considerable collective cost. I contracted a virus which corrupted quite a few files and needed to re-install FSX. Easy, I hear you cry but, no. The ubiquitous 'Validation' page appeared but would not allow me to proceed. I contacted Microsoft, to be informed that they no longer validate FSX for 64 bit installations. There are a number of very annoying aspects to this:1) I have never had any problems, issues...whatever with FSX on my platform. It has run flawlessly. I cannot recall any installation problems with any 3rd party add-ons. No assurances, from me could extract a validation key from Microsoft.2) The only unsupported program is FSX Deluxe which I purchased Retail in a 'Gold' edition which also contained Acceleration on a separate disc. To install Acceleration (which is still validated by M$) one first has to validate FSX Deluxe. Catch 22.3) I only purchased Win 7 64 bit on the advice of M$ as they stated to me, that all multi-cored cpu's (Q9650 Extreme) should run 64 bit OS's and definitely not, 32 bit.I'm a little peeved. I could, of course, go down the road of locating a copy of FSX which does not require validation but that is against my philosophy and ethics and is not an option. So, I'm now faced with the purchase of Win 7 32 bit and another hdd, so I can run software that I have purchased legitimately. I intend to take this further with a complaint to the appropriate Ombudsman, here in Australia but do not hold any hope of a good outcome. I point out, that I would contact M$ with this whinge, beforehand but I am finding it almost impossible to locate an email address to send it to.Anyway Folks, Caveat Emptor and no, I'm not generally an M$ knocker.Jon Shearer

This is the first I hear about MS not validating FSX under a 64-bit version of Windows! Can you add more info please?Have others heard of this?Cheers,- jahman.

JonToo late now, but a repair might have worked rather than a reinstall. Are you sure FS is completely uninstalled?Bob

Here it is. Link I'm sorry but the link is having trouble working. I suggest you go to the appropriate 'Compatibility' page at Microsoft. Make sure you explore the 64bit tab as it opens with the 32 bit tab.Jon

Ok, so Cynicism plays on my thoughts regarding Microsoft. Another thing that didn't help was the Support Ditz at Microsoft's Support Desk. Gleefully informing me 'We're getting nowhere here Jon'. You think?? What I think, is that Microsoft owes me, either: A Validation Key on the proviso that I immediately upgrade that installation to the Acceleration Expansion. Fully acceptable to me...or they give me an OEM of Win7 32 bit. Am I being unreasonable? Keep in mind, that Microsoft has, only recently taken this attitude, as the software validation has always run previously.Jon

It looks like MS is trying to prevent people from migrating FSX to newer hardware, forcing them to buy Flight when it comes out if they want to benefit from W7 64-bit.

Im not sure Im following you on this one, they are saying they are no longer supporting fsx for 64 bit OS unless it has the Acceleration pack? Is this something new, I have done countless installs and it accepts my key every time.

Just to let everyone know I called M$ because this really pi$$ me off (1-800-936-5700) and talked to a lady which she said that this was not true and they would indeed provide me with a reactivasion license regardless of my OS, I hope you keep us updated on this Jon, I trust a fellow simmer over a call centre agent any day of the week, I really hope you can get things squared away. I will lose it if I have to reinstall and they pull this crap on me.

I'm talking about this on another forum, too. No one else is having any problems. I have phoned them twice and they flatly refuse to validate. It appears the problem is originating in one of their call centres on the Indian sub-continent. Even M$ USA says it's rubbish...but I can't get validation.Jon

Have you tried asking for a supervisor and threatening to report them to MS? Certainly can not hurt.

They will not validate me. The only reason I'm given is that it's a 32 bit program and they will not re-validate it for a 64 bit OS. I even explained in words of one syllable that I would be immediately upgrading to Acceleration and not even opening Deluxe. Stone wall. So, next stop is the Electronics Ombudsman.Jon
